This may or may not have been asked before, but I've done several searches in the forums and can't seem to find the info I'm looking for.

Is it possible to use an Alesis ADAT as an 8 channel interface to a PC?

Personally, I use a Firepod running firewire to my PC with Nuendo. A friend/client of mine wants to do his own recordings, and is currently using ADATs (with tape). He wants to upgrade to a setup like mine, but I was thinking since he has the 8 inputs on the ADAT he could save some money on the interface.

I'm not too familiar with the ADAT machines and what they are capable of, so I'm not sure if it's even possible. If it is, I'm confident I could set it up. I just need a point in the right direction.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I'd appreciate it.

I used to own an ADAT XT .If I remeber correctly they had a optical out on the back, I never used it. But I think it was just typicaly ADAT optical we use now, so a RME ADAT to PCI (hammerfall) interface would probably take the digital output from the ADAT into the PC. That would mean you would be using the A/D in the ADAT.

Remember that you don't get two way conversion at the same time when using an ADAT as an outboard converter. You will need to manually set the clock to be master or slave as well as manually switching from digital to analog mode depending on what you are doing. Meaning that, if the ADAT is set to analog input, you can't use it for D2A conversion at the same time while you are using it for A2D conversion.

I've never tried it with an ADAT, but the way the logic is setup and the way I understand it, it is not possible. Analog input goes to analog output and digital output, and digital input goes to analog output, but you can't do both A2D and D2A at the same time because you are either in analog or digital mode at any one time. The same thing applies to the HD24.

I've found out that for what I need to even try this ADAT thing, it's just as cost effective to go the route of a Firepod or some other similar interface. So as Remy first commented - "Problem solved!" Just not the way I expected.

Of course, I never expected Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker of the House - but that's a debate for a different forum.
