Just got a chance to listen to the new Kings of Leon album Because Of The Times.

As far as I know this is the loudest clearest music CD ever. Minimal cringe maximum boogie.

Upon loading it into wavelab, it looks like most of the smashed recordings of the day but if you put the wavelab display into fast mode ( maybe looks more RMS than peak) the KOL waveform is 3-5 dB hotter than anything elses, which is confirmed when you listen through the speakers.

This is now my new holy grail.

Eathan Johns, son of Glyn Johns, nephew of Andy Johns did the recording in his studio.

There is a great article about Ethans studio with lots of mention of the Kings sessions in the Sept/Oct 2005 issue of Tape-op. It is the issue with the VU meter collection on the cover.

Apparently the entire thing was tracked live. Vocals too!. He has a big TV soundstage style studio room and his drum sound is based on the leakage from the vocal mic.
