You have to buy one of the following mic preamps or the world will explode. (Decoded meaning you have some spare cash and the voices are telling you must ABSOLUTELY MUST blow it on a new pre.)

Your current options are:
2 channels of Vintech 1272
1 of X73
Buzz Audio
2 used AMEK 9098's.

You could also sell some blood and buy a DW Fearn VT1. Yes, my precious..

Since you got some API pres & EQ, nothing else gets used in your rack after the drums are down...What do you do ?

1 of X73

You buy that one because it is the widely regarded EXCELENT copy of THE world beating Neve 1073 a total CLASSIC for gtrs, bass, vox whatever...

The pre PLUS the eq is important, having just a pre only is less of a tool.

If by 9098 you mean the eq & pre units...hmmmm tough one, but if just the pre units - get the X73

IMHO

By whom? I have to say that I certainly don't consider it to be an excellent anything, with the possible exception of wonderfully hyped. It ain't a 1073 by a longshot, that's for sure.

If you can get a PAIR of the 9098's with EQ then that is very cool! Great for overheads.. Cranking in 'sheen' or super top.. They would add a definate new flavor to your tone pallet. They have a Jazzy 'right there in the room' presence to them...

Re the X73 several on line owner reports seem to reveal deleriously happy owners.

Either way, I find variation in EQ character almost as important as mic pre 'action', it's good to have several types around.

BTW it may be obvious, but you could use an API pre for eample and JUST the Amek EQ for example.. I do this sometimes with my Focusrite 215 units, use em for the eq but utilise another pre amp. So that is a sort of 'secondary' use for a pre/eq unit you might not have thought about..
