Is there a rackmount multiband compressor that one could possibly afford? Or can you only find this effect in plugin format? Is there a way to group some basic plugins together to create multi-band compression? I somehow think this question belongs on a different forum.

Yes, there are outboard multiband compressors. Since these are advanced audio tools, they tend to cost what professional advanced audio tools cost. So the answer is NO. If want cheap, you usually end up with crap. You can cheaper than new by shopping used. If you want specific advice on software plugs of any kind, post over in the Studio or Digital Recording forums, as this forum is non software related.

A multiband compressor is basicly more than one compressor with a crossover. If that is something that you can create using plugs, then you would be on the right track. You should know however, that while the concept is basic, proper design and implementation so that you don't create unwanted artifacts and are able to achieve desired results is far more complicated.
