What are you using for a pickup? Try a Countryman....aaaaiiieeeeee I can't take it! Can't give a short answer!

Seriously, this is a huge can of worms you are getting into. We're talking to holy grail here. No one knows the mystical secrets of amplifying/ recording the upright Bass. (And it's the BASS damnit. Nothing else qualifies. The slab is an ELECTRIC bass.) Check out the acoustic forums on talkbass.com and prepare to read for a month.

Sans Amp DI for bass. Not too expensive with a sweet sound. You certainly want a superhigh impedance input to prevent loading down the pickups. So something with a JFET input should do the job fine. Just make sure that whatever pre-amplified DI you use, make sure it doesn't have a transformer input and is well beyond a 50,000 ohm input, which ain't enough. That's fine for keyboard thingies.

Of course then, you'll want a limiter as well. Just remember, you'll want to press all four buttons on an 1176, if you can't afford one, even if the meter gets spastic.

Spasticley yours, yours, yours, oh baby!
