I am guessing that hardware compression, limiting and EQing at the mastering level will yield much better results than software, especially garageband. Are there any good hardware compressors, limiters and EQs that won't break my wallet?

I would tend to disagree on a couple levels.

1 - the "affordable" route, only plug ins will really get you close to the kind of quality necessary.

For $1000 I can get some damn good EQs and modeled compressors which I could NEVER get for $1000 worth of hardware. Not to mention the capability of precision.

2 - Maintenance of Hardware is expensive. If you have the money, fine. If not, plug ins don't degrade over time.

If you have $25K, go get some good hardware and you'll get better results than with plugs. If you have $5K or less....go with plug ins. Or...better yet, hire a guy who has $25k or more of hardware.

Cheers-

I think I may look into getting them done at a studio.

Without trying to jump in sideways, there's a reason why there are mastering facilities in the first place.

I couldnt agree more 8) lets leave the Mastering to the guys who have the ears and the talent and the rooms and Gear for it..
There the guys that make us Look Good!
