I've seen a lot of helpful replies on here, as well as a lot of close minded holier than thou horsecrap, which really sucks.

I hate to break it to you, but that's the way it is on pretty much every forum on the web.
Try hanging out on a political forum for a few days, lots of name calling there.
My wife hangs out on an aquarium (fish) forum, and those guys do nothing but fight, call each other names, and act holier than thou - she was just reading me some PM's she's gotten on exactly that matter...

Anyway,
I don't run a studio in my house for a living (house is too small, I have kids, and a wife, etc...), but my home recording and live sound work helped me land the full-time gig that I have today.

I have some friends that do work full time in their home studio, but most of their studio spaces are separated from their living area.

yeah I know its like that on every forum, that's why in my first post I let it be known that all that negativity is worthless to me so they might as well just click the back button!

and my new house, the studio will either be in 1 or 2 bedrooms. its just going to be me and my lady, so we don't need too much space!

I'm trying to find out what dimensions I should look for in the room. I'd LIKE if I could use one room, divide it into two rooms while treating it, and have the live/tracking room in one then the control room in the other. that's what I'm reeeally hoping for, but I'm not sure if its the best idea?

I have been in this business for over 30 years and it's still tough.

I own a substantial audio, video, HD prod. house and recently have built my first home studio.

I built my own home studio to Enjoy recording once again.

After 10 to 14 hours at the OFFICE, the last thing I want to do is hang around any longer, even if it's to record original music with my Son's.

I'm sure that some work will get done at the house, but for the most part, this will be my escape.

Be careful mixing work with home. When the two become one, where does it leave life?

If you can afford the real estate, make the largest room the "live" room and run a snake through the wall to the adjoining room and make it the "mix" room.

Some of my best recordings have come out of the room to my right - my dining room - it's got reflective walls and crap hanging on it (pictures and such) but I love the sound.

My mix room is the one from which I'm typing this to you.

There's a sliding wooden door separating me from the dining room. Since we've had kids I don't do much with these rooms anymore, but they have served me well, no treatment, no nothing, just berber carpet on the floor here and tile over there.

Oh, and the laundry room, just to the dining room's right, is a great place to record guitars...

I've worked my ass off for the past few years, it's time for me to relax! So I'm setting up this studio, writing as many albums as I can, and spending time with my bride to be.

I'm in austin texas too, so there will be plenty of projects for me to record!

Hey Tyler Welcome!
I have been running a small home based studio for more than 10 years now. I have set up shop in three different cities. I still have a day job, and really don't plan on ever relying solely on my studio for income. The studio just pays for itself. I have a decent collection of gear now, but there is always something else, it nevers ends. Once a gear slut.....

Anyway my advice would be to keep your day job, and record for fun first, and money second.

i'll definitely do it for fun first, it's honestly MOSTLY for myself and any band i may start (i'm literally addicted to making music, currently i'm in 4 pretty serious bands, all COMPLETELY different styles of music)

i just love it!

i'm hoping i can make some albums that will pay for the studio and more. i have good faith in it, very good faith!
