I need to do some stereo micing, for drums, etc, and also just mono Micing for vocals. I want to get two pres and two compressors with two mics. right now i have a RODE k2. was going to pick up another for starters

now... the question...

here are some options i have looked at.

get two Avalon 737's

or

get two UA 610's

or

get an Avalon 2022, and some other compressor (i got a killer price on an 2-1176 limiter, but i heard thats a mistake to get for recording, and better to run through after recording, so that may be a later investment)

Im more leaning between the UA 610s or the Avalon 737. not so much the 2022, unless I'm missing something.

everyone has avalons, but i have been hearing some poeple like the ua's much better. what are your thoughts? I can get the 610s for much cheaper, about half price, but if the Avalon is really the way to go, i dont want to screw myself over. I'm getting into the whole recording scene. I'm a composer, and i an going to be tracking some drums in a few days with another engineer helping out, but i want to get my own gear so i can learn and do it on my own.

Thanks,
Jason

Or you could just trust the hear say of other people.

I don't, but I USED to.
AG is right, you need to try some of this gear out and judge for yourself. There are dealers who will rent gear like that out or arrange a trial basis.

yeah, i hear ya. i understand a lot of it has to do with personal taste. i am in quite of a bind. a singer is flying into sing for an album, and my old studio partner has "fallen out". I had more composing gear, he has more recording. So he had an avalon, and now i need to get something quick to use for this female vocalist that comes on nov 1. I have heard the avalon, and used it, and also a solo 610 ( i want to get the la610 though). both seem good. I havent been able to pick it apart. So i didnt know, since im in a rush situation, if there was anyone , 737 or 610, that stood out way above the other, since i dont have time to sit down and nit pick.

they will be used for drums, pop vocals, hip hop vocals, guitar, etc. so a wide range.

Check out the female vocals on this page. I was floored by the 610.

http://www.target-music.ch/studio/sounds.htm

I have read a lot about many different preamps and have searched all over the internet for opinions and samples of as many different preamps as possible.

The UA stuff is the old Putnam preamp. Some love it some not.

Some say the Avalon is better some say the Avalon is very overrated.

One thing I do notice is that everybody sells the Avalon stuff retail and a lot of people are selling theirs. People who sell their SOLO 610 usually do so to upgrade to the other UA 610 models, not to get another brand.

I tend to believe the Avalon stuff to be overpriced and overrated.

I just read about Andy Johns who engineered the stones and Zep and he records with the 1176.

Take this for what it's worth as I have not done a lot of recording, I just have good ears. I have a Solo 610 and plan on getting a great River ME-1NV. To my ears they had the best sound for the price.

well, i ended up getting the la 610. compressor/pre. i want to pick up one more to use with my two k2's. so far so good.

yeah i think that when it comes down to it, the avalons seem to be just too pricey, and overrated. i have been getting better feedback about the 610's / ua gear.

Hmmm...with so many wonderful choices out and available today, why in God's name would you limit yourself to these two devices. There are choices such as:

DW Fearn
Manley
Langevin
Pruple
API
Neve
Millennia
Forssell
Hardy
Great River
Shadow Hills
and at least 20 other brands that aren't coming to my mind right now.

Get out and listen to some of these. You'll put away your ideas about Avalon in a heartbeat!
