So I've been hobbling along with a pair of old monitors (who's brand name I won't mention) that I got a "deal " on from a "friend". Seems they work better as an FM radio than a reliable monitoring systems. Not to mention that the high end (even when attenuate) is making me go deaf.
Anyway... realizing good monitors are pretty much the most important part of my whole set up (not to mention keeping my hearing intact) I'm hoping to get a new pair.
I don't have a lot of money to throw towards them, but realize I need to spend something substantial to make it worthwhile.
What I want to know is: Am I right in thinking that KRK's are generally a pretty good way to go for something that is:
- reliable
- for a home studio (composing, recording my own music and sound design)
- in the $600 range
?
Is there one model from them that really stands out?
I know all the stuff about me having to try them out and how my room set-up affects it, etc. etc. And I know that I'm not going to get the ideal set-up with a budget under $1000... but at this point I figure I should just focus on getting the basics down first.

KRKs are generally quite decent. I think the most significant thing that changes from older to newer models is the packaging and hype, not necessarily a dramatic increase in quality.
I have a pair of KRK ST6 (passives) that I really like for a lot of stuff! They sound great and are pretty darned cheap! I'd be comfortable mixing any size project on them.
Pick up a pair with a decent amp and you're golden!
Of course, their V6/V8s are great as well and so are some of their newer ones.
Don't limit yourself though...
I've found some GREAT deals at GC from time to time. At one point, I could have gotten a pair of Event ASP8s for about $700 for the pair and I hooked a buddy of mine up with a pair of Event 20/20 (actives) that they had lying around for about $200 for the pair.
There are always deals to be had.
If you save some money, check out some good acoustic treatments too. Good monitors in a poor room = poor sound.

Well, I sat down one rainy afternoon at my former favorite music store before they were recently bought out and ruined by GC with a composite CD of stuff that I had mixed and pre-recorded material I've grown up with. I must've in there by myself for a good 40 minutes and what I realized was while A-B'ing everything I kept going back to the pair of Yamaha HS80M's they had set up. To my ears, I enjoyed the flat response and could just hear more detail and better imaging than from the Genelecs, Tannoys, KRK's, Events etc. that were also set up. I didn't buy them that day. However, I just saw a used mint pair on ebay for $525 including shipping and snatched them up. I received them 3 days ago and am currently in listening heaven. On the plus side, these are active monitors also.
I guess my point is that you should check out the Yamaha's

Is it worth looking for second-hand monitors or do I risk them having problems (like my current set)?
I get the sense that in the case of brands like KRKs, they are being inprooved a lot with each new model so it pays to get the more recent models.
Is this true?
