What do I look for in a patchbay? Are there some models you guys can recommend? Reasonably priced for a budding recordist, of course. Give me the RNC of the patchbays! I'm not sure how to figure how many points I need, either. I think 48 would do it--that sure seems like a lot at my stage. My DAW has 2 XLR and 6 1/4" inputs which I believe are unbalanced, would a patchbayallow me to connect, all eight mics at once?

Well, that's a good question. I have an RNC comp, a VTB-1 preamp, a stand-alone DAW, a P.A., and monitor system. I'm not very clear on exactly what is or isn't used with a patchbay. Would you hook all of the above into it, or just the comp and pre for the DAW? I was also hoping that a patchbay would solve the problem of plugging mics into unbalanced inputs on the DAW. I have 4 of those little XLR/ 1/4" adapters, but they won't fit side by side in my DAW inputs. So I figured if it would solve the problem now, I will certainly be getting more gear later, but I don't want to get a sorry patchbay.

Patchbays are best for situations that require lots of flexible interconnection. Any commercial studio needs patchbays so that almost any combination of gear can be connected quickly. A Person would need a patchbay if they want the convenince of flexible interconnect without accessing the back of the boxes.
