What do you think of the 2480 vs Mackie,Tascam,Yamaha etc. regarding the sound quality ( please reference the 2480 not older Roland units they upgraded thier front end on the 2480)

hi all
i have recently (8 months ago) moved from a roland 2480 to a radar 24 system.
While i had the 2480 i used it very hard and had a lot of stability issues - in fact 2 live cd projects crashed and burned - not very happy clients (this was in spite of extensive back ups and several redundant systems in place)
bottom line though is.....
the roland is a great all in one box IF - you go into and out of the 2480 by way of the digital i/o's - the pres and converters are just ok - AND - this is the biggest issue i had - STABILITY - 10 months ago VERY questionable - in fact, roland gave me a new unit after i told them about all of the system crashes -
so.....
IF they have fixed the stability issues, and IF you use either the 2 digital i/o's on the back, or use an R-bus interface (8 channels of AES i/o),
it's a great box

Roland, Akai, Tascam, etc All-in-One boxes don't compare fairly to the Mackie. The do not do the same thing, nor are they designed for the same user.

If you are just starting out, the Roland is a good hobbiest/writing tool. It is not a serious tool.

Mackie's HDR is just a pentium computer packaged in a box with a pull out drive option. You still have to buy the 10+ year old converter cards. It has many issues. Go to the Mackie User's Conference and read it.

The iZ Radar is THE box to buy in my opinion. It does not require a computer. It is VERY stable. It has a great buffer system so that cheaper IDE drives may be used, or a better performing iSCSI drive. It has great sonics, and people all over the world use these on pro projects.

You could do a laptop based DAW, but that is a whole other can of worms.
