Hi there, this is my first post. I am building a new studio. Baiscally I'm lucky to have a spare house untill May.

In this house there is a large bedroom and a small boxy type room. I am looking to turn the large room into a recording room and I don't know about the box room yet.

For ease I was thinking of mixing in the large room also since most of the recording will be solo stuff.

I currently have a budget of 0 ;) but I want to take time and build this up slow and will be able to purchase most things pretty soon.

Left over from an old recording machine I have, a pc, an M-Audio 2496 sound card. Line 6 toneport, guitars and amps etc. And Wharfedale 2.1 Monitors.

I am unhappy with any sound I get from this equipment so I want to upgrade everything to more pro gear.

My main purpose will be to record my own album and I plan to use what I've got to get rough demo's of the tracks by Christmas. While adding gear to start properly recording after christmas and mixing about march.

So plenty time to get the money for the gear etc.

Sorry for the long opst but here's what I was looking for help on.

I have no in studio experience so don't really know all the great gear and so would like you guys to recommend what I should get. Price isn't a huge issue but I don't really want to spend more than 600 on any one item.

Though my main requirement would be to record 12 inputs at the same time (not often though) into a mixer and into Cubase 4.

So I'm looking for a mixer, an audio interface, any relevant converters, preamps, mics and anything I'm overlooking.

Thanks for your time.

Doing some more research I think the Presonus fp10 sounds really good (I could do 8 inputs is probably enough anyway).

This would also take care of the preamps too, are they good enough?

And for mixing I was meaning more a controller that works with cubase 4 and would now require 8 channels. Preferably with a decent amount of knobs for th eq settings on the channel strips in cubase.

So the presonus has enough connections for mics, line in and instruments so would I need converters? Doesnt seem like I would?

What do you think of the monitors I have? worth an upgrade? I know I need to get a decent set of headphones also.

I will need to build up the mic collection from scratch but was looking at getting a few sm57's for the instruments. Don't know what to get for vocals, I have a rather nasal type voice but I am taking singing lessons.

There may be time to get the gear. There may be money to buy the gear. But with "no in studio experience" so far, I am not sure that there is enough learning time built into your plan.

It's not about the gear, really. At least, it is not about the gear as much as it is about knowing how to use the gear.

I'm not trying to discourage you, just to suggest that you needn't agonize too much over whether the preamps are "good enough" and such. Get something that works, and is decent quality, and then learn to use it to make really great recordings.

Plus, I'm a bit confused... you have stated that your current budget is 0, but also that price isn't an issue and in a few months you will be able to buy pretty much everything. And what happens to the studio when you no longer have a "spare house" come May?

I have previous experience recording, i know how to use cubase very well and I have a decent ear. I ment not in a commercial studio.

About the 0 budget, I mean I have no savings to put in right now ao will have to buy the gear bit by bit.

Come may I will be moving, I can take all the stuff with me.

So basically yes, I am just looking for guides on what gear will be good quality, relatively cheap for what I am doing.
