Hello... Just want some thoughts here... I have a Panasonic Da-7(pretty clean and transparenent pre's not much color at all.) into Mackie MDR/DP3.0 Setup. RNC compressors and some decent mics SM7's .57's, 4050 etc etc. Looking to put together one good channel of pre and compressor this year. Due to financial (family) situations I have to save cash to get this stuff so I cant buy a ton at a time. Some this year some next etc. So, I am looking at picking up a Neve type pre ( probably an averill 1272) a john Hardy single pre and Crane Song trakker. My question is would it be smarter to go with the 1272/ trakker combo and pick up a FATSO next year or would I yield better or should I say more versatile results getting the FATSO first and then picking up a trakker. I will eventually get both but approximatly a year is forever is me to wait so what would you do. trakker or FATSO first ( I have used a disstressor extensivly and can rent one locally(it's a pain but possible) but have heard the trakker is more versitile) I will obviously check out all and send back what I dont like, just want thoughts from those in the know. ( I do rock/alternative production mostly single song and songwriter stuff.) Thanks.

Jules,

I'd be really interested in your thoughts on Focusrite's Platinum range of outboard. I know it's not up there with Avalon, Neve or even the Fatso, but surely you've seen one here and there in a few studios and had a chance to gather some opinions on them, particularily the Focusrite Penta?
I only ask because I'm seeing such a disparity between different reviews I read from Sound On Sound and other respectable magazines. Most think they sound great, while others think they're utter crap...?

Your thoughts would be appreciated

I'm not Jules but I have owned a Platinum voicemaster at one time. It wasn't bad. For the similar money I prefere the Presonus solid state stuff, quite a bit more.

Ditto. DJ Quik turned me on to these. Be careful though, the project studio version of this is...Better than mackie, but below pro standards on several applications. The pro versions are hella schweet. A secret weapon if you will. A lot of used markets sell both versions at the same price range. (about $400 for 16 effin' channels!) They have a clean, solid state 'sound' to them. They recently released a 4 band eq called the ASC, although I haven't tried it yet.
