Avalon vs mindprint vs focusrite

i want an analog stereo compressor/eq for my drums submix, tracking vocals, and mastering. one requirement is i have to be able to use the comp on my drum submix live.

i currently use the Wavesgold bundle and love my ren eq and ren comp to death but i recently started sequencing on my rs7000 instead of Sonar so i want everything to be more quick and immediate (thus the need for a comp on the drums submix)

so anyway my shortlist is as follows:

1. Focusrite mixmaster + Focusrite voicemaster

2. Avalon 747 + Focusrite voicemaster

3. mindprint dtc

4. TL Audio 5052 (http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/2002/Ivory-5052.html)

5. go digital and get a yammie desk with the Waveshardware card plugin (ren eq, ren comp, etc)

i should be able to find all of the above used (except the mindprint and TL Audio ) as i have 6 months or more to track them down (not in any hurry)

i like the idea of tube harmonic distortion as a creative tool but don't have to have it...

i am also really digging the idea of the mindprint eq because its nearly a dead on replica of the Wavesren eq. the TL Audio stuff is noisy and that concerns me.

does anyone have any thoughts of any other products/combos where i can get some great sound under 2k?

the music i am producing is house/techno/etc if that makes a difference and i am recording vox on an Audio-Technica 4030 series mic which is suitable enough so far.

thanks!

How about a Langevin Dual Vocal Channel (DVC) for $1600. Basic opto-compressor so it should be great for vox, maybe sketchy for drum submix. Simple high/low (treble/bass) tone controls.

I'm also interested in the Toft Audio ATC-2 when it becomes available. Two channels of mic pre, FET compression, and four-band eq. Anybody seen one of these in person yet? They look great on the PMI website. Oh yeah, list price is only $1300.

Or how about an FMR Audio RNC and RNP, and two Speck ASC eq's. That should take you pretty far down the road.

I/ve used the 747 on drums, vocals, bass and elsewhere to good effect. But I can't say it works on all drum mixes, or even all vocal tracks, so the type of drum tracks you're running may or may not work thru it. You should rent one and try it.

Fletcher was talking on Pro Sound Web about how he loves his 747 on drum bus. He gives some tips on using the side chains that I'm anxious to try.

There are a whole bunch of other alternatives that you shouldn't ignore.

An RNC is a great useful tool I've also used on drums, vocals and the stereo mix. $200.00

I use a JoeMeek C2 opto comp as my drum two bus comp a lot. It just gives me the sound I'm looking for many times, and it only cost me $150.00

The Fatso is awesome on a lot of stuff as a comp and "Fattener". I got it used for $1450.00

But the grand-daddy of them all, the Distressor might be the most versatile comp on the planet, and I see them on ebay for less than $1K all the time--so there's your $2K (for a pair).

Good hunting.
