I am in the process of builiding a new studio. I have the option to go to up to 9 1/2 foot ceilings. The room is not that large (23 X 12) and I'm thinking 8 foot ceilings would create a more controllable space. I mostly record acoustic bluegrass, folk, etc. but also have a drum kit and do the occasional rock and roll band.

Any opinions?

Hey Mark - I was about to jump in and tell you not to do it, based on my calcs on axial modes of a 23 x 12 x 9.5 room - there were some fairly large holes in room response til I got down to 17 feet length (no change in other dim's) Then I found

;)

The mode calc at studiotips has 3 steps in bold in the upper left corner, and all 3 must be done in order every time you change a dimension. This confused me at first, since my simple version only requires entering the three room dim's in feet and tenths, which makes it very fast to "dial in" the last dimension of a room you can move one wall of, to find out where to put that last wall. (great for remodels, cramming rooms into existing space)

The one I wrote is much simpler, which is both good and bad - If I hadn't discovered theirs, I would have had to write something similar - lucky me... I can see a good use for both theirs and mine - I may upload mine to their site and call it "simplemode" or something.

Anyway, from the more complex spreadsheet it appears as if your room may only have potential problems at the 63 hZ band, and below - this would require some sort of bass trap - Apparently the other "holes" in axial modes are filled in by the tangential and oblique modes not calculated in my spreadsheet. If you don't already have a copy of Alton Everest's Master Handbook of Acoustics, I would definitely recommend it. Among other things, he has chapters on "roll yer own" absorbers, traps, resonators, etc.

Guess my vote on ceiling height now goes with the rest of the guys - The money you save on building/moving that end wall can go for some bass traps - Have fun, the life you save will be your own... Steve
