I've probably been in before but hey, good to repeat yourself sometimes.

3x PG58 (good vocal mics)
2x AT Brand-X (awesome as overheads - and nothing else really)
2x AKG D310S (good on, err, snare drums)
1x Shure Prologue 12H (dented popshield - good on bass drum second only to the PG58)

Good to repeat yourself sometimes. Wish I could repeat the PG58s, then I'd have 6!

soapfloats Wed, 01/21/2009 - 23:14

My List, Project Studio
(with some notations as to good vs. bad buys FOR ME)

2 - Sennheiser MD 421-II (as advertised!!!)
1 - Sennheiser e835 (+, 1st mic purchase)
1 - Sennheaiser e609
1 - Blue Bluebird (a little hot, but nice, esp on guitar cabs)
1 - Blue Ball (+, good on just about anything, esp vox & snare bottom)
2 - AKG C414 B-XLS (my "$$" mics; I like them, but....)
1 - AKG C-3000
2- Cascade FATHEAD (I like on female vox, guitar cabs, mando, and banjo so far!)
2 -Cascade M39 (++ - great for the price, but not a KM184)
4 - SM57
3 - SM58
1 - Shure Beta 52
1 - MXL 3000 (+, male vox)
2 - MXL 603s (+, AGui, OHs)
1 - AT2020 (+/-, jury's out; used on hihat and sax w/ success, but not keen on tone)
1 - CAD KBM 412 (Nice bass amp mic)
3 - CAD TSM 411 (good alternative to my 421s/57s)

(+) = pleasant surprise!
(-) = did the job, but mediocre sounding

I wish I had got the AT4040 instead, and spent the $ on the MXL 990s on something else. I'd also like to get some other Sennheiser dynamics, and AKG drum mics (someday?).
Otherwise, barring some of the beauties listed in above posts, I'm happy with the choices I have.

Fitz - how the #@*! did you get those for UNDER 6k?
I spent a relatively similar amount on my mics, but no Royers, cheaper Cascades, and less/cheaper SMs!!?

To - sdelsolray - we keep the Astatic and Turner around mainly for harp players which happens from time to time. The Astatic is the all-brown 200 bullet velvet voice series. It's actually Hi-Z crystal from the late 40s. Really tinny and distant sound but OK for what it is. The Turner is the U9S dynamic - not too bad sounding. The Monarch is the TM-16 from japan. I believe it is a dynamic from the 1950s - i don't think we've ever used it. I think it was given to us a while back.

It is always good to do 'inventory' as has been said.

My updated list.

2- ADK Model 5 (modded)

1-ATM 63
1- Peavey PVM-520TN
1- Beyer Soundstar
1- Shure BG 6.1
1- Avantone CR-14 Ribbon ( yeah, kinda dynamic....sorta)

These are all current 'in-house' and the list doesnt reflect the 'borrowable' mics I have access to. In the last year I have had several Mik-Teks in as well as a couple of Royer's, Avantone CV12's, and the Heils.

My next upgrade is coming up soon and a Royer R-101, and a high-end pair of SDC's are on the list. I will also probably get one more LDC vocal mic and since I do a lot of Blues recordings, another ribbon besides the Royer. Cascade perhaps?? I'm thinking Neumann 184's for the SDC's but will try a few before I buy. The AT4041's are incredibly good so this would be an upgrade looking for a bit more depth.

Converters and preamps too. As well as PT11 when they release it. New video monitors too. Need big letters these days and real high definition. Old.

Regarding adding a high-end pair of SD mics, I suspect you will find that the Neumann KM184 is not that different from the 3 Zigma CHI mics you already have, except for the HF lift in the Neumanns. Also, Larry V. mentioned to me that he'll be releasing another SD capsule with a HF lift similar to the KM 184. That will make them even more similar. The other thing with the 3 Zigma CHI cardioid SD is that it shares many similarities with the Schoeps CMC64, although there is enough of a difference to warrant having both. High end SD pairs that you may wish to consider with noticeable differences include (1) DPA 4011 and (2) Gefell M295 (which is actually a MD, not a SD size).

How different are the ISA one and the ASP880 for you ?

Until I got the ASP880, the ISA One was the only preamp I owned that had gain staging features that gave me broad and effective utilization of my ribbon microphones. The 880 gives me that ability in studio, and I take the ISA One on the road for venue recording. Like the ISA One, the Audient 880 is loaded with features, however, the ISA is way more flexible and tweakable. You should check out the specs: https://audient.com/products/mic-pres/asp880/overview/
There are many reviews on various websites: Sound on Sound, Gearslutz, TapeOp.

I have collected some really cool preamps over the years, and still like their coloration. To accommodate their use, I got the ASP880 interface. It has 8 superb preamps and converters, but each preamp has a bypass switch (blue A-D button) that allows you to COMPLETELY bypass that particular channel and patch in your outboard gear. It is the single best new feature I've added to my studio in years.

pcrecord Thu, 11/16/2017 - 11:32

Thanks for the info... I ask because I already have 8 ISA preamps and ask how the 880 is different sounding and if worth adding to my collection of preamps in the future.
I also have a 4-710 that I could sell at some point. Also I'm a gear freak and like to know where units stands from each other ;)

Boswell Thu, 11/16/2017 - 15:24

The ASP880 is an 8-channel non-transformer pre-amp plus an 8-channel A-D converter with 96KHz ADAT output. The pre-amps have analogue outputs, and by default feed their corresponding converter channels. However, the pre-amp outputs and the A-D inputs can be processing independent sets of balanced signals on a per-channel basis.

The Focusrite ISA range has a different sound, largely due to the input transformers. Both have their places.

I'm very impressed with the ASP880 that I have, and would urge anyone to hire or borrow one to try for a session. It's not an interface, and needs to feed ADAT inputs on some other piece of gear to get its digital outputs into a computer.

nsureit Tue, 11/21/2017 - 22:21

Boswell, post: 454071, member: 29034 wrote: ...It's not an interface, and needs to feed ADAT inputs on some other piece of gear to get its digital outputs into a computer.

True that. I run ADAT (optical) out of the ASP880 into an Audient iD22 interface, then into my laptop via USB. I run my monitors out of the iD22, as well. By the way, the iD22 will add two more mic or line input channels, giving you ten total IOs.

Boswell Wed, 11/22/2017 - 04:08

I never fully understood why Audient only put one ADAT input port on the iD22, but it may have been for USB data rate reasons. The ADAT can be set to use S/MUX protocol to give 88.1 and 96KHz sampling, but at these higher rates can take data from only 4 of the 8 channels on the ASP880.

I thought the converters in my Alesis HD24XRs were pretty good at 96KHz, especially after I carried out the standard low-end circuit improvements, but the ASP880 is in a different league.

I just configured the ADAT as S/MUX. Have not had a chance to make comparisons yet between sample/bit rates. I had forgotten about that feature until you pointed it out.

Hello mate, I am thrilled with Universal Audio 8p interface but I do use my 610 pre or Alalon 737 hardware pre’s as well as Neve and Trident hard pre’s.A bit tastier than the plugins unless I spend time setting the plugins up with the perfect match. My hard Fairchild and LA-2A are brilliant but I’ve used the exact plugins with no discernible drop off.If I play a gig and have ample time I still use analogue gear including my top compressors.I love setting up a pure analogue p.a. when I’ve time. It’s lovely

Wholly cats I forgot my favourite stage handheld mics.I use two on vocals consistently.Audio Technica AE 5400’s and Neumann kms 105’s.In my wild youth I stole from Daltry and taped my cord and my SM-58’s because they were so bloody dependable.Never used condenser mics in the ‘90’s.Now,due to expertise & knowing to avoid feedback the AT AE5400 is it and lovely as well is Neumann kms 105.I can hear every syllable and lovely dynamic from the condensers vs my old SM58s.My Son is preferring Shure Beta but his beautiful voice would sound fine through any mic live.In studio it’s Flea47 for vocals AMS RMX 16 hard over Lexicon 224 hard for most.Although his album will have Neumann m50,Flea49, Along with Flea47Vintage and Neumann U47 Vintage as well on vocals. His picking on his Gibson SJ200 sounds amazing through AKG414,U67 and the Miktek CV4 has a sweet vibe. The Telefunken (AKG)Ela M251 60’s version will get some play too(IDK why the current version of Telefunken 251 or Neumann U’s are so dreadful compared to 50’s and 60’s Vintage but it’s a fact.Ivan and the Lads at Flea have managed the Vintage U47 sound for amazing prices.Their Flea49 is spot on Neumann m49 and 50.I dig it betta.).Every mic whether it’s an exact brand&# has a slight different colour as you all know.Cheers musicians&producers.

2 -Cascade M39 (++ - great for the price, but not a KM184)
4 - SM57
