Hey Guys,
I just got my hands on a U97 for 400.00. I am aware this is their "entry level microphone". I was wondering has anyone used this mic? What do you think of it? And how would you compare it to a TLM 103?

Bear, check around with some of the old dealer network, and a few of the 'broadcast' supply houses. The U-97 has indeed been "discontinued" which is why a few places are attempting to "blow out" some inventory.

As far as the U-195 is concerned...it's a favorite of mine. It's kinda like a 47FET on steroids without the boxiness. Between the "FAT" switch and the "Bass Rolloff" switch, you can really tailor the bottom quite nicely. I often use the mic with both the "FAT" switch and the "Bass Rolloff" switch engaged...it nets a large [as in huge] bottom that doesn't get too "woofy" / "washy" / "undefined".

That trick works very nicely on a lot of kick drums sans an equalizer.

shit, the U195 is a great mic. try it on the side of the snare in FAT mode. you get this perfectly compressed snare sound with no compressor. ive also used it on bass cabinets with great success [normal mode] and kick its great too. i was looking for a U97 to try on a bass cab, where did you find one? im looking for one.
