An emulation of the Neve 1073 EQ.

I downloaded a trial version of it yesterday. It's pretty close, considering it's missing all the wiring and electronics - not to mention the actual 1073 preamp - that makes up the real thing.

I put it on a scratch vocal track yesterday, just playing around, and I thought the result was very good - warm, smooth, full bodied - I suppose it could be described as "classic" sounding, if you are looking for that type of sound.

I do like the M/S feature; available on the Stereo version, which is also included in the trial/demo.

As a side note, having picked up an iLok has allowed me to run trials on a lot of plugs I didn't have access to before, and it's my belief that these plug developers are getting much better at emulating what they are shooting for... certainly much more than they were 12 years ago, when the results were somewhat iffy - and, to stand in their defense for a moment - based on average studio computer/cpu power available at that time.

I think about the PC I was using 10, 12 years ago, CPU power/speed, the amount of RAM I had, the OS I was using, etc., and there's no way I would have been able to run any of these on more than just a few tracks, even if they had been around at the time.

I don't know yet if I will keep it or not, I want to try it on some drums and guitars first.
So far, I've only used it on a vocal, and it was a scratch vocal at that. ;)

If you have an ilok account, you might want to check this plug out.
Trial versions run 7 days, fully functioning.

This UAD vs Waves comparaison is not very good. As real 1073 every emulation was based on different aspect and sound signature of what 1073 was. So dialing the same settings on both is pointless.

What I'd want to do is to mix with one than try to do the closest sound with the other regardless of the settings differences.
If you can't achive the same sound, then you could decide which one sound better to you !

Just my opinion of course ;)

Exactly !

In this exemple, it is obvious they sound very different but I bet if I had both, I could achieve equivalent sound with any of them.
I can also bet you I can find many other ways to get a good sound without those emulations ;)

Where plugins emulation trick us is that they often exagerate the effect they emulate, +2 on one may be equal to +4 on the other. I heard good results with both plug-inson youtube.. but it's youtube !! half of what you listen on it is marketing tools to sell more products..

Better capture better emulation result

Better capture, better emulation result. Better pre, better or even an astonishing improvement to others may even happen.

I have an M-2b and UAD plugs at my disposal here. I am excited to see how much impact a clean pre has on how one personal idea of "good better best" varies to the next. To my way of thinking. If you are into emulation, invest is a serious clean preamp to start with. And I'm not talking about the ones under a grand.

I only watched the Scheps video to see what he thought about it. I didn't base my opinion of the plug on the video, I downloaded the actual plug and tried it myself.

I don't think it's any big secret that - as with various plugs/manufacturers having different sounds with the 'same" plug - that the real 1073's could be different from each other as well, in terms of sonics. Although I never heard any of the real ones sound bad... just a bit different. They all had pleasing textures and sonics.

IMHO of course.
