Audio-Technica Expands Acclaimed 50 Series with New AT5047 Cardioid Condenser Microphone

STOW, OH, April 4, 2017 Audio-Technica , a leading innovator in transducer technology for over 50 years, is introducing its new AT5047 Cardioid Condenser Microphone at Pro Light + Sound 2017 in Frankfurt, Germany. The most recent addition to A-T’s acclaimed 50 Series (which also includes the AT5040 vocal microphone and AT5045 instrument mic), the AT5047 is a premier studio microphone that features the same capsule as the AT5040 but with a transformer-coupled output and optimized electronics. It is equally at home capturing instruments and vocals.

Boasting an exceptionally wide dynamic range – the widest among all Audio-Technica microphones – the AT5047 captures the full, expressive character of a sound source, no matter how loud or how soft. And since it is equipped with a transformer-coupled output, the microphone maintains a constant load output impedance, even when capturing sources at extreme SPL, resulting in a stable relationship between the mic and a mic preamp or console input.

The AT5047 features four rectangular two-micron-thick diaphragms which function together to provide a combined surface area twice that of a standard one-inch circular diaphragm. Discrete components have been carefully selected and optimized for maximum performance and compatibility with a wide array of microphone preamps and console inputs. Advanced internal shock mounting decouples the capsule from the microphone body, and the included advanced-design AT8480 shock mount provides superior isolation.

With an elegant, durable housing of aluminum and brass, each AT5047 has been hand-assembled and inspected for 100% quality control. A custom hard-shell carrying case with die-cut foam compartments offers protection during storage and transport.

Yes, interesting. It's an AT5040 with an output transformer to give a bit of colouration ("warmth") and a lower output level to avoid the pre-amp input overload accusations that were levelled at the 5040.

If the SOS guy had had a bit more balls, he might have tackled the AT rep about off-axis sound quality. Still, that 5040/5047 series is targeted at solo vocal and instrument miking, so it shouldn't matter too much.

I used to live about 3 miles from AT's HQ and only factory, in Stow, OH. I used to rehearse 6 buildings away from it on Commerce Drive. This was years ago... back in the 80's...
They used to let musicians in on certain days of the year to test out prototypes of their mics - as well as, at that time, their multi track cassette units. (As it turned out, AT made the first portable studio with balanced ins and phantom power).
For several years in a row, during the summer, they would have a weekend "yard sale", where they would sell off prototypes of their gear, or sell stock that their reps used to carry around for demo uses that couldn't be sold as new. I still have a couple different hand-held dynamics that I bought at one of those sales, for something like $10 each... both of those mics still work, too.
The 50 Series mics - it's really a whole other league for AT, at least in comparison to those days.
I wish they still did the open house, I'd love to try any one of those 50 Series mics.

I bet the transformer based 50 series are going to sound excellent. Reviews should start soon, can't wait to read about them. I'm told by AT America the product should arrive in North America this summer. AT5047 is on my list now. Next will likely be the transformer based version of the AT5045.

To my experience, top level mics should have what it takes to compete with the best mixes. In Canada the 5047 will be sitting around $5000.00. I'm likely going to have a few top level mics because I am focusing my studio towards vocals and guitar collaboration. If I get one, I will be sure to share the news. And please, back at you. I think people are pretty excited about this new one. I know I am. I had a 5040 here but had to give it up before I had a chance to use it. Damn shame. It looked stunning.
