I've been toying around with the NSKit Soundfont and some others for drum tracks. Using keyboard to input each instrument into a separate midi track.
I came to the conclusion I couldn't get satisfactory control over the sounds (which are, among other things, quiet). So I solo'd each midi track and mixed it to a wave. So now I have a HH,Kick,Snare, Crash, Ride, Toms, etc... wave for each component.
Does anyone have experience with doing things like this? Is this a good idea? Am I smarter than the average bear?
Another factor in this is that I'm not a superstar midi programer with midi and this sure seemed easier :D !

It´s one of the kits I used to use, before I made my own kits. Try these for some variation:

The Cream drums and refill are my latest attempt at sampling, and total at 103 mb, without cymbals. Try the Rock kit too, for cymbal sounds. I´m going to make a new kit, comparable, at least in size, to Purrrfect drums. Look out for that ;)
Oh, try the Maestro Malmsjö soundfont if you´re short on AWESOME piano samples. I´ve found a new piano that I might sample soon, and it´ll be a classic.

You can record each instrument as a separate audio track, but that seems like a really long way around the block. If the sounds are too quiet, I'd look at solving that first. If the problem is the original Wave inside the SoundFont are too quiet, you could export them all, raise their volume, and bring them back in. This is a nuisance for sure, but probably no worse that what you're doing now. And you only have to do it once! If it's not the internal Wave volumes, then maybe it's simply an issue of gain structuring inside your sequencer.
