Looks like Steinberg has announced another new product at the Musikmesse show in Frankfort Germany, the new "Cubase SX". Here is a quote from Computer Music Web Site:

"Nuendo meets Cubase - new nuendoesque audio engine, new VST instruments, Full OSX/XP support, more effects, 5.1 mixing, unlimited undo and more..."

Steinberg has created their own website dedicated to the Musikmesse show at:

Here is a quote from that website about Cubase SX:

"With Cubase SX, Steinberg takes the next step and presents the most powerful and intuitive Cubase ever. Cubase SX dazzles with intelligent MIDI Input and processing tools, new virtual instruments and effects, easy-to-use editing, scoring, 5.1 Surround, mixing and mastering - with a fresh user interface and a brand new software engine, for Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS X.
Cubase SX has been fully reengineered and includes the latest technologies from Steinberg's digital audio laboratories. Cubase SX offers new handling and breathtaking performance, all designed specifically to support the creativity of today's musicians."

They have some cool screenshots, and a bunch of other information. The interface has been totally redone, and I have heard that it looks more like Nuendo, although I have never seen Nuendo, so I can't be sure. It will also have the VST system link, and a whole new audio engine.

They are saying it will be available by the end of Q2 of this year.

Published pricing is as follows:

Cubase SX will be available at the end of Q2 2002 for EUR 799 (MSRP). The update from Cubase VST/32 will cost EUR 149, the update from Cubase VST Score EUR 199 and the update from Cubase VST EUR 299.

Opus...you must have known about this already...what can you tell us?

Looks pretty awesome to me...now I've got to decide all over again...Nuendo or Cubase SX?

I have been reading the 3 PDF files that are posted online at that site, the brochure, feature list, and the FAQ...Whoa! I am getting blown away! The automation has also been totally redone...it's about time! I hope that it doesn't show up too buggy as I've heard that Steinberg products are wont to do...

If this thing lives up to its billing, it is going to set a whole new standard, and blow away Logic 5 or Cubase 5...Check out the PDFs...

Yes, sweet isnt it? Amazing how Cubase suddenly is made to look a lot like Nuendo huh? Cant wait to see what the new version of Nuendo is going to look like if and when it comes out........
So James..whats your move now? Nuendo or SX? personally...I would probably go with SX...but hey, I'll go for both since I can! HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Yeah...you suck dude!!! Must be nice to have free reign of any piece of SW you want!

I have been taking a really hard look at everything I can about Cubase SX, and it does look appealing, but then again, we'll have to wait and see what Nuendo 2 has to offer...from everything I have heard on this and other forums, Nuendo just blows away Cubase...now comparing Nuendo to Cubase SX might be a different story, but I guess the story really won't be complete until we are comparing Nuendo 2.0 to Cubase SX...It is really nice to be a consumer nowadays with so many choices and so much competition.

Have you seen the recommended (*not* minimum) computer specs? Dual-processor 1GHz or higher! Whoa!!! But then again it will have the VST System Link, so I guess I will be able to use my old dinosaur PIII 1GHz in the System Link rather than as a boat anchor!!! :)

In the Steinberg Cubase SX FAQ, there is the following comparison between SX and Nuendo:

What are the differences between Cubase SX and Nuendo?
Cubase SX is clearly a music creation and production program, with audio and MIDI features specifically designed for these activities such as the Drum Editor, Score Editor and a newly designed Audio Loop Editor. Multi-lane Controller Editing is provided offering complete control over the playback characteristics of all MIDI and VST Instrument equipment used. MIDIplug-insand enhanced MIDI processing functions are now standard and we have built in the support for loading up to 16 Virtual Studio Instruments simultaneously. Extensive groove and swing functions are designed specifically for easy handling of rhythmic musical elements and excellent automation control is built in so you can create the perfect final mix.

Nuendo, on the other hand is designed as a media production system. It can handle post production, DVD-authoring, music recording and many other types of specialist production tasks. I went on the Steinberg chat session from Frankfurt musikmesse. Charlie Steinberg informed us the CPU usage of SX wasn't much different than VST5.1.

I'm running a 1GHz PIII, which I don't expect to upgrade before SX, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed in this department.

I think Steinberg are gonna change the 'Dual' recommendation, as it's scared a few people.
