I, Opus, do solemnely swear to never get a VIA chipset board for my own computers! My roomate got a sweet deal on a Shuttle AK11 mobo with an Athalon 1.3Ghz processer...great deal..cant complain..serious boost in power from what he had..anyways...the Manual wasnt too much of a help installing the memory..I'm installing 2 128SDRAM PC133 chips and 1 256SDRAM PC100 chip into the system..usually larger chips go first..general rule of thumb..good so far..nope..not this motherboard..even with the jumper set to 100Mhz and not 133Mhz it cause my secondary IDE controller to not work at all..giving me no 80 Pin conductor cable...blah blah blah...so, after thinking it was the bios setup..and or..the IDE "cable" and config..I finally swapped RAM position..der
so, got it working..great..install Win2k..cool, hip..happening..restart..nope..unbelievable..some amazing BSOD that I've never seen before..turns out I need to install the VIA 4 in 1 patch to make the IDE cables work properly? What the f**k is that about? SHouldnt a motheboard allready have everything installed for you? God damn..ljp..you were a smart man to give your up without trying to fight it..god bless you for going Intel!
VIA SUCKS MY HAIRY ASS!

heh-, well, actually, I have several VIA chipset motherboards here. But my main machine, win2k, liquid-cooled P3 monster box, is VIA free! and NO problems whatsoever. I even have litestep running 4 desktops, email going, network access, the works.

I do operate (occasionally) a SB awe64 on a win98box that has via chips (for the sound fonts, and ProTolls free, and now cd arch). But nothing major over there. Actually, I only had problems with the 428. The alesis ADATEDIT on it handled 8 tracks just fine on an AMD K6 500.

Amazingly enough, linux does very well with VIA chips onboard. It;d be great if I could get the RME digi96 running the free audio drivers there. It works fine with the commercial drivers ($45).

That said, I did have problems with a clean install of win98 on the via board. Same damn via-4-in-1 crapola as you. :( and network access!!)
