Ive been wondering for the past couple years now just how to get started in making music for commericials. i basically cant write complete songs thatwel, but i can make 1 min and less cool things.. and my friends and others always tell me most of my stuff sounds like something from a tv commericial, or even radio commercials, or movie/video game stuff... ha.. i dont know... but i just keep gettin told that, and just how does one go about it gettin stuff out there to be heard? kind of a broad question but i just have no idea where to begin, even my music and sound recording professors dont really know.

OR, is it just poeple inside the big company doin music, like they have their own people.. such as for example. if TIDE wanted a song for a short commerical, do they scout around for stuff or just have people in their advertising department..? or is it a little of both? any info of any kind would be much appeciated.. ive just been searching online endlessly, and everywhere, and had no luck whatsoever.. thanks in advance!

Find out who the creative director is and ask them if you can buy them a nice lunch. Keep asking until you get a bite. When I first broke into recording commercial work this is the only way I could get a meeting. Let's face it, people dig free food and if it's during thier business day, they have to eat lunch anyway, right?.

The creative director usually over-sees the projects and picks the players. I have a close friend who does all the music for American Greetings websites. He does very well financially and they keep him busy. It's a good sector of the industry to go after but you have to be persistant to get noticed. Once you do a few small projects that are well-liked, you will get referals.

Good luck and GO FOR IT!
