Hello one and all...I simply need some feedback on my impending upgrade(?)...For years an analog tape head, i now find myself standing on the precipice of digital recording...I've read many posts on this and that and the other and need to make up my mind about the "best" way to approach my needs...Currently I'm looking at a stand alone custom built computer(amd drive very very fast and large) a Pro Tools factory(le series) set-up an analog board(midi controlled mix) for its high quality preamps and good outboard gear. mics etc. I write a lot and have several band projects though its not a business. i like the ability to edit and mix-down in the digital realm but 'love' the sonic range of the analog. am i pointed in the 'right' direction? any suggestions? I've considered the Mackie hard-disk recorders also but want a very stable platform due to my limited expertise in this realm. .editing is important and sound is imperitive. THANKS. .davedog

Dave,

I think that for now we all use a mixture of analog and digital gear, for a variety of reasons. Your post sounds like you are already on the right track about what to use both analog and digitally. As for the digital system I have only used DA88's (38's) or Pro Tools and had success with both. Maybe someone else can come forward

I've been using ProTools with high quality analog front end for a while - outboard mic pres and compressors. But I mix inside ProTools. I know there's lots of sonic advantages to a great analog board, but my budget and work habits (working on a dozen projects simultaneously and needing complete automation and recall) make staying in proTools the most practical for me. I'm not saying that my work is in the class of the super-pros who hang here - but I've got a lot of happy clients, and hopefully, my stuff gets better (as I learn more) with every project I do.

Thanks one and all for your posts...No I have not 'settled on anything....this is school time for me and i'm reserving judgement for the day i plonk down my buckolas...I'm beginning to understand the 'nature' of what i'm about to embark upon...theres only 29 solutions to each question...I'm beginning to see that quality converters is much needed as well as a quality master clock...I'm going to be using a soundcraft analog board (midi controlled auto)...and would like to be able to record more than 8 tracks at atime....my eye has been on the digi001 factory system since its release but am still unsure as to its capability to do what i want....I LOVE the analog 'depth' of the sound and the soundcraft is very very good for i have to pay for it...(dont ask)I also have become aware of the time clock issue in syncing all parts and additions to a mix..so its a given that a quality master clock is in order...and high quality pre's....I'm also willing to go a bunch of money to get the best pc i can get in order to have the kind of performance i expect out of my gear...I'm also looking into the steinberg packages as far as a digital recorder goes...also have looked at mackie's mdr/hdr24 and the tascam....i want a stable platform and the ability to edit for song writing in an easy, affordable yet sonically pleasing format...and i want to be able to burn my own masters and back up for future tweeking...I don't want much do I??!!!Theres a system out there and i've got some budget to acheive this...and i want to up-grade the mics and pres in the same breath...and it has to be somewhat upgradable....I have very good ears and want to hear what i'm trying to achieve...and i'm willing to learn about the ecentricities of the system i decide on....ANY SUGGESTIONS?
