Hello everyone. This is actually my first post, but I was wondering if someone could help or point me in the right direction.

I have a Alesis DM6 electronic drum. (bought in 2010) On the back of the drum module, there is a 'house' USB socket and an USB cable can be plugged into the back of the computer. When I plug it in, my computer indicates that the USB has malfunctioned. I tried other ports and it is the same thing. I am running windows 7 home premium, 64 bit

I don't want to think that my drum module has a problem because it has been 4 years or so since the purchase, but can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks

If you use the usb connection on the dm6 alot, it is quite possible that it could be defective, either the chip or an open contact in the connector. (bad soldering)
The quality control of Alesis drums is not quite like Roland's. But not the same price too.

If you make it run again, check if you installed the latest firmware. There is one available on Alesis website.

That was actually my first time connecting it up to my computer using the USB socket, 1st time in 4 years. You think time might have had an effect on it?

No not time.. That's why I asked. If you would have used it, it could have been damage overtime.
But if you never tryed it either it was defective from day 1 or you have a driver issue.
Did you have a CD with it. Have you tried to install the drivers with the usb unplugged and wait that the installation ask to plug it ?

I don't think it came with a CD. The website even indicates it's class compliant, so no driver required. I really hope it's not a defect, but evidence seems to be suggesting that...
