Once the API is actually available, it is designed to be the master section of a small console made from 7600 channel strips. Is there any reason that it wouldn't work just as well with anyone's collection of various outboard modules? (Assuming that you wire everything up properly with respect to levels, etc.)

Can the 7800 be used to help turn a handful of mic preamps and EQ modules into a small 4x2 console?

with the proper Tech this is not a problem.
Oliver is a good one for this.
It's a great Idea to get your old modules in a console situation again.
The API might be just the ticket. :D
I'm going to be doing this as well with a shitload of WSW modules, but I have only one master section. Maybe the API for the other 20 modules? cool, thanks-Mike ;)

Seeing as the 7800 is very much in the 'vaporware' stage, it's tough to say what it'll do if it ever comes out.

I think you'll probably have a better time trying to guess how the the US Government is going to react in the 'War on Terrorism' than speculate what, when, or how the 7800 will effect our lives.

As for making a "4x 2 desk", the API 3124M+ already does this, and it has it's own micpre's to boot. You can very easily use a "line input" to bring in Neve, Trident, TL Audio, etc. If you need more than "4x2", then the 'Speck Xtramix" will give you everything you need...in 4RU.
