I just got HD 10. I know HAHA I know. So aaaanyway I installed the HD system and now need a monitor controller. Im using the alternate inputs on the Digi 003 as a monitor controller right now in the mean time. What do you use and what would you give it on a scale of 1-10 and why? Im not going to get a 5.1 controller right yet so think stereo. Although I would be interested in building one if it would be worth my time and if someone could help me put a schem together. aaaannnnnnnnnd GO!
Cheers
Paul

i have a passive box with transformers i picked up years ago. i was interested in your question because i am looking at an upgrade myself ... i am leaning towards the Radial box. (kurt wants for his birfday).

i did a quick search and [="http://www.sweetwater.com/c417--Monitor_Management"]Sweetwater[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]Sweetwater[/] has about 3 pages of them ... prices range from about 70 bucks to 2 or 3 grand, depending on what features and how esoteric you want to get.

How much are you willing to spend? do you want [room correction[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]room correction[/]? do you want a [="http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BigKnob/"]complete master section[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]complete master section[/]? [cheap[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]cheap[/], [="http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JIBS/"]cheaper[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]cheaper[/], [crappy[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]crappy[/]? [="http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MC3/"]passive[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]passive[/] ?

are you looking for [high end[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]high end[/] controllers? [="http://www.sweetwat…"]this one is for laptops[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]this one is for laptops[/]

lots of choices.

OK before I answer your question, let me say CONGRATULATIONS! Yes, your 003 will work with PT11. Also since you bought HD rather than the CPTK route, it looks like you will save yourself $300 if you upgrade. Nice!

Now, on to monitor controllers. Yes, the 003s fail at this. I looked at this situation a while ago and here were my considerations.

1. I wanted something that I could calibrate so that when it was set for zero, I got 85 dB SPL for a -18 dBFS in PT. You may want to do -20 or something else, but the idea is to have a repeatable reference.

2. I wanted a detent with 1 dB steps & a display to tell me at a glance what my monitor gain is.

3. I wanted a decently large knob.

4. I needed at least 3 inputs.

5. I wanted to use SPDIF for the link between my interface and the monitor controller. The reason for this is that I wanted to leave all of the analog outputs of my interface to be available for various headphone ISO feeds....I always use at least 4 and sometimes need more.

What I ended using was a home theater preamp (an old Outlaw 950). This works just great for me....and it was essentially free. I'll give it an 8 grade. The only real problem with it is that it is big and takes up too much space. You can find much smaller units that work well and don't take up too much space.

Not to dig into the wound but an HD "system" will not upgrade to HD11. My vote goes for the [="http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CentralStPl/"]Presonus Central Station[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]Presonus Central Station[/] as a middle of the road product. It's packed with features for the price which isn't necessarily a good thing but the price is nice. On the higher end the [Avocet[/]="http://www.sweetwat…"]Avocet[/] is very nice.
