More Preamps required for my Digi 002

I am looking at buying an ADAT preamp rack to connect to my Digi 002 as i now need more preamps as am constantly patching cables.
I need something that has 8 Mic/Line inputs and have looked at the PreSonus digimax D8 but it has 8 XLR inputs (On the rear) and only 2 line inputs on the front panel. I really need a unit that has 8 line and 8 XLR inputs.

The other unit i have seen is the M-Audio Octane 8 MicPre but at £539 its much more than i want to spend just to get some more inputs to
my Digi rack.

I have also seen the Behringer ADA8000 for £150 which has 8 XLR and LIne inputs and got a good review in Sound on Sound magazine.
The unit has a +48v switch to supply phantom power to condenser Mic's and when pressed supply this power to all inputs, what happens if i
have some dynamic mic's connected and some condenser mic's?

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated!

dynamic mics are generally safe w/ phantom power. The digimax, if you ask me, noisy. I haven't used the ADA8000, or Octane, but i do use the focusrite octopre-Mk2 on some drums (toms/hi-hats,ect). I'd compare your current prospects digitally to hear the differences in conversion.

I have just been looking at the Focusrite Octopre MKII Dynamic unit for £499 and basically from what i have read on the forum about pre amps is the
more money you spend the better the pre amp and that the digi 002 has the budget focusrite pre amps in.

I dont really want to spend £499 on more pre amps but surely thats where it all starts, having good pre amps to capture the best signal/sound
as you could have the best Mic's in the world but rubbish pre amps!

Any comment or help appreciated! Any one else got a Focuswrite?

The Focusrite Octopre Mk II for £349 (you don't need the £499 Dynamic version) is a good starting point. It has 8 mic/line inputs (unfortunately two of these are on the front panel) and an ADAT output. If you just want 8 input channels, it's a lot cheaper (in the UK) and comparable in performance with the Presonus Digimax D8. Both of those two units are significantly better than the M-Audio Octane and much better than the ADA8000.

The Octopre will also go to 96KHz output via two ADAT lightpipes if at sometime in the future you upgrade to a computer interface that can handle S/MUX ADAT protocol.

So you need to use to optical outs to be able to use all 8 pre amps simultaneously at 96Khz otherwise i can only use
4 channels at 96Khz via one optical out to my digi 002?

The Digi 002 only supports ADAT at the standard lower rates, so 8 channels at 44.1KHz or 48KHz. If in the future you upgraded the 002 to something like an RME FireFace 800 or UFX, you would be able to run the Octopre at the higher rates (8 channels at 88.2/96KHz). Connecting third-party hardware as your main interface assumes you have the latest hardware-independent version of PT, or else are running different DAW software.

Thanks for the info, will probably upgrade my setup by buying the Focusrite Octopre MKII Dynamic for now then look at changing the Digi 002, for the price of the RME I would add another £200 and buy the Mackie Onyx 1640i as am looking to get into doing some live work with bands in the future.
