Hey fellas. I'm new to the site too. My name is Leroy, gonna aim for being an active member on this forum. I am born in the most beautiful country in the world, called the Netherlands . I'm 18 years old, and live together with my girlfriend. I got my own recording studio space behind my mothers house. I am what I think most of u guys would call a complete noob to the world of recording. I registered here to learn from all of you guys, and share my experiences. Found this forum through Google btw. What do I do for a living? I am a bartender and a singer. I also started my own youtubechannel a year or what ago. My idea for this channel is uploading covers made in my own studio and when I am ready upload covers there from people who recorded at my place. I think I can be nominated for having the least studio gear here. As I said, I am still a starter.. ;-) Oh and, please forgive me for grammar mistakes or things like that. My English writing isn't that good..

See you around on the forum!

Keary Fri, 07/13/2012 - 19:53

Hello to all, my name is Duncan Keary and I am from Scotland. I was looking for engineering and band advice from Google and it led me here.

I have recently finished an "entry level" sound engineering course at college and truly believe I have found my calling. I have decided to take the educational path for now as it is very hands on and is tutored by a former industry professional engineer who has worked with artists such as Seal. I restart in September and have made a point of getting noticed within the music scene, locally. Engineering open mic nights, an under 18's gig and also, today I recorded a local guitarist in his living room!

I am very much looking forward to learning from this site and getting to know everyone.

Welcome to Recording.org. So you are originally from Wyoming? Transplanted to Grand Rapids, Michigan? Cool... I'm from Detroit. I arrived and destroyed after hitching a ride with my mom for a little over nine months.

I found myself lost here. Confused by a provided link from a friend that I thought was a link to his site? And then I find myself in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada after lifesaving brain surgery. Floating in a sea of brain brine at the same time of Katrina. Seven years now and counting... one, two, three, four, five, six, seven years. Yup, I can still count up to seven.

I'm making progress in a backward kind of way.

I googled "home recording forums". This website was number 2 on the list. BTW, I'm brandy new to this site, and home recording in general. I'm really kind of intimidated, and not sure where to start. I have a couple of programs, and some gear. I'm not looking to be a pro, just wanna play around with some compositions just for myself.

RemyRAD Sun, 09/09/2012 - 04:34

Well, welcome, Babycakes! You've come to the right place. This is a great site. This is my seventh year contributing here.

So... it would help... and you could tell us what kind of gear you are using? You don't have to become a pro to make lovely recordings of your own. But you do have to understand what you have and how best to utilize it. Expensive equipment and microphones is not a prerequisite to making professional sounding recordings. In fact some of the best recordings you've ever heard are mostly made with $100 SHURE SM57/58's. And a Mackie or even a Behringer makes for a more than adequate mixer. But that's only when you need to run more than two microphones at the same time. Most common computer audio interfaces are mostly two XLR microphone input devices. Where other FireWire and/or USB 2.0/3.0 and the new Thunderbolt interfaces, offer 8-24 simultaneous inputs on those computer audio interfaces and digital mixers. Those devices are only important when you need to track the entire band at once. Generally I like to have more than two simultaneous inputs. Like a pair of microphones on an acoustic guitar and vocal microphone simultaneously.

These $100 microphones can actually outperform $3000 microphones. It's true, really it is. You might find other microphones that sound better than those $100 microphones but they really aren't better. They're just different. And it's only when you understand that difference that it makes a difference. I could never use that $3000 German microphone as many places as I can use that $100 microphone. Besides, who would want their $3000 microphone destroyed by a crappy rock band only paying you a couple hundred bucks? I only utilize those expensive microphones on jobs that could pay me enough to replace one of those microphones. And that only happens a couple of times per year. Though I would use those $3000 microphones on my symphonic and operatic recordings. And not where a loose drumstick might do with some damage. So I have a wide collection/selection of general-purpose dynamic microphones along with the esoteric and expensive condenser and ribbon microphones to choose from. I definitely have more than $30,000 worth of microphones alone. OMG! That's crazy! I'm crazy! I'm crazy about recording. And my favorite microphone is the venerable SHURE SM57 & 58's. I don't care if there are other dynamic microphones that sound better. I don't want those. Well... maybe a couple of Sennheiser MD 421's? Yeah, I like those a lot also. I don't even want to waste my time with the hundreds of other dynamic microphones out there. Sure, I've used lots of others and they are all just fine. But there is a certain sound and consistency one can expect from the SM57/58 series microphones that one can count on.

When it comes to microphone preamps, whether they are stand-alone devices or built into your computer audio interface, I've made perfectly lovely recordings with a simple five dollar IC chip microphone preamp that compare well to the 600-$1500 preamps that I also have. So I really don't care what I use as long as it works. I'm not out to make a clinically accurate recording as I am out to make a nice listenable recording. And you don't need expensive stuff to do that with.

So clue us in on what you'd like to do and we'll help you.

Hi all, My name is Steve. A friend co-worker told me about your site. I live in Virginia US and am primarily a guitarist but I like recording and electronics. I am 50-something years old ;] and started bouncing tracks around on a Sony 2 channel reel machine in the 70s. Went the standard route to 4 track, then 8, then PC DAW presently 1 PC with Adobe Audition 3.0 (used for mastering) and 1 PC with Audition 2.0 (used for multi-tracking/ mixing.) Good to be here and nice to meet you -all !!

RemyRAD Sun, 10/07/2012 - 17:22

That's a great site. Great interviews. Some, a bit dated but still quite relevant. It's only the industry itself today that's not quite relevant, LOL. Or at least what's left of it? Just sorry as one of the last great Remote Trucks in the USA, I didn't make it onto your site? I've been around since ' 91.

C'est la vie

To add,
If you are here to contribute and help, that would be more than welcome but when all your posts are direct links to another site, what do you expect? You were reported by members.

So far it's looking like your sole intention for being here is self promotion. GS is the best place for this.

OK, no problem. I didn't mean to be out for self promotion, I can see your point. I made just two posts, one saying hello and what I do and the other pointing to a mastering video that I thought had some really interesting information. To be clear, I help run that site creating producer interviews, studio tours etc as my little bit to help pass on the techniques and methods that are being lost with people like Ken Scott, Tony Visconti etc. It's all done in spare time, costs me money and my objective has always to help promote *other* people and not myself, in fact, you would be hard pressed to find my name or image anywhere on it, I'm not out for self promotion or trying to drive publicity. I'm lucky that as a young engineer I got to work with some great people and now that I've got a regular job in the other side of the industry want to put something back. I also set up loads of magazine features for engineers and producers in the UK and US (mostly Resolution magazine if you've seen that?), used to be on the board of the UK's Music Producer's Guild and am currently on the board of the APRS (UK's version of SPARS). TBH I don't care about self publicity and maybe my mistake was after joining up to try and show I'm serious. Take care! :-)

audiokid Mon, 10/08/2012 - 17:59

Why not post what you know here then instead of pointing to that site? Do we really need another site repeating it all over again.
We are also a lot busier here therefore you will be helping more people thus, paying it forward like you say.

Please feel welcome to post content rather than links.

Hello everyone...
I am new to this forum and thought I'd introduce myself. As a long time (30+ years) veteran of the business - audio engineer, former studio owner, session and live musician - I'm always interested in reading and learning from other professionals.
I was attracted to this site while searching for information on mastering a Bluegrass project; a friend asked me to assist, I made it very clear that I was NOT an M.E. and his best bet was to hire a real one LOL.

This site looks very intuitive and offers quite a bit of information.

I look forward to being a member here.

Thanks :)

-Donny

RemyRAD Thu, 11/29/2012 - 13:53

Hi there Donny and welcome. Yup, there's plenty of us folks like you. You're another former studio owner... sorry to hear that. Looks like I'm going that same direction? I can't say business Sucks because there isn't any business to suck. So some sucky business wouldn't be bad right now LOL. Really nothing to laugh about actually. At least my Equipment has some resale value. You know that old junk? Neve, API, UA, Neumann and the beat goes on. But Donny... you're not going to learn anything here, you're going to teach it. Right? Right. 30+ years so I know you have a clue. Because some of these people here really need audio Inspector Clouseau'.

I'm just the Pink Panther and I'm Purring now that you're here. Meow, wow.

Thank You Remy. :)

I'm not as depressed at being a former studio owner as I thought I might be when I closed my doors. Truthfully, I don't really miss the rat race (70 hour weeks) nor do I miss much of the clientel ("dude, you gotta make me louder!") and I certainly don't miss having to keep up gear-wise for those clients who heard the word "SSL" one time in their lives and now swear that they need one, although most wouldn't know an SSL G series if it landed on them...

These days I keep myself busy as a hired gun engineer and session cat. I can still work in the studio but I'm not the one who needs to keep the lights burning. ;)

I look forward to learning here, as well as helping out, when and if I can, from time to time.

:) I found the site via a link a friend posted on facebook. I've so far only mixed 3 songs for my first program for a Christian rock radio show. Needless to say I am here to learn as I'm going in with zero knowledge and it sounds ok but I want it to sound AWESOME before we air. I'm using audacity and am learning but would like a forum to ask questions as I stumble around the program. :D

I was looking up reviews about the Warm Audio WA12, in the list of google items that came up. A thread about the WA12 popped up from this site. The responses on the thread were asking pertinent questions. I looked around, and liked how the site is handled. I am currently in school for Music creation, and production, and audio engineering. I plan on eventually taking the post production , audio & Video courses.

ITOLAX Fri, 11/29/2013 - 04:07

Hi I found recording.com through google after typing in a question regarding how to hear the sound of the computer through your headphones while also being able to hear yourself and the mic of course. Not word for word like that but it was simplified and that's how I got here I then made an account thinking I could ask questions as simple as yahoo.com however I am stumped to find no way of doing that? only being able to reply to threads. I found the recording category and now I am here!! I still wish to find out how to be able to hear say iTunes and the mic at the same time right now I can hear myself through the mic but when I play any sound through my computer its totally mute! Sorry to turn this into a help me situation but then again is not that what this site was created for? I have limited time and need to record asap and I cant even after spending so much can someone tell me or guide me through this please?

Hi guys, I've been a big fan of recording at home for quite a while now. I love to play guitar, write riffs and solo over backing tracks until I drive myself (and everyone else) crazy! Ha ha! I love learning about recording techniques and gear. I'm really looking forward to hanging out here with you guys and learning all I can... cheers!
