digital snap, crackle, and pops...

i'm rather new to the world of digital recording...having two learning curves to master:The PC and Sonar xl. i'm running sonarxl w/A7V333MOTHERBOARD, 1gig athlon, win 2000 pro and 528 megs DDR333 SDRAM, Edirol ua-5 sound card. i'm getting good results experimenting with different latency settings etc. the problem? it seems I can't stop random clicks and pops from creeping up in the track. The input/gain is low, latency settings don't seem to help. also, when i click on "play' or "stop" i hear an audible pop. this makes auto punch impossible. no other programs are running on my system and everything runs great otherwise(no drop outs etc.) Would a dual processor set-up eliminate the problem? Faster hard drive? more ram? Does various "de-clicking" software work? Sonar recommends disabling ACPI?(but they seem to suggest that for every problem) then, the tech guys at my computer shop just raise their eyebrows at that suggestion disabling ACPI?hmmmmm. Do I just have to live with the clicks? Love the digital flexibility, hate the eternal system tweeking that sucks up valuable creative time. What's the secret to a stable system? any help would be greatly appreciated...

I would try doing what Sonar said. You can always restore the settings if it screws things up. It has been my expierence that computer shops are gennerally behind the curve when it comes to music applications. Clicks and pops usually appear when there is a clocking problem. Are you digital clock setting correct? E cue and Opus are the ones who could help you out on this... Guys?

Thanks for the info. i've been checking around for information to disable ACPI when it has already been loaded onto my system but haven't found the instructions as of late.(i did change the Power options at start up from "User Defined" to "Disabled" can this do any harm to my system?) i'll check the clock...Thanks again, this site is incredible, I only wish I'd known about it sooner...

It won't hurt your system to disable the power functions. That is just a feature that automatically powers down your computer if it has been idle for a specified time. This feature should be disabled. All automatic functions like power and screen savers should be disabled. I noticed you asked this same question on the computer forum, Opus2000 and e-cue are over there and they are the ones who really know about all this. Check them out.......Fats
