Heard Protools HD ??

I just got back from NAMM and got to 'see' the new Digi HD stuff in operation there. It all worked fine however it was not a listening environment. Has anybody actually heard the difference of the new converters at any sampling rate and how does it compare with Prism's and Apogee tackle?

At least the pricing looks reasonably promising for anyone starting off into Disney, oops, Digi land.

I saw it as well, didn't hear it, but found another "small" problem.

Therein the problem (apart from lying)- with major plug-in developers well behind, it will be more than 6 months until HD will be a fully functional system with all (needed)plug-insavailable.
Digidesign's upgrade discounts are valid for 6 months, it puts companies like ours in an impossible situation. To ensure a system that can deliver we need to stick with the old until all our production tools are available for the new platform. Waiting likely means we mis our upgrade deadline, which will cost us many thousands of dollars extra (I/O's, core, cards, chassis, plug-in upgrades etc).

Problem 2. The ADAT bridge provided a cost effective I/O option without having to fork out for proprietary A/D and D/A converters. The new converters might be better, but, even without having hear them, the specs are still below those of the converters I am currently using.
For pro applications the new system neccessitates the purchase of a number of 192 boxes - including a bunch of converters.

specs I was talking about: Digidesign HD192 I/O
as compared to the Lucid 2ch 9624 D/A and A/D, which, altough providing about 3 dB less dynamic range, take a lot of beating for a number of good reasons, and the 2 x 8ch TrueMatch, which in my opinion, is superior to anything else, period. The latter's specs include a dynamic range of 153 dB (!!). and in addition they eliminate the need for mic pre's - you go mic-Truematch-disk (or digital tape)

1. Why do you assume that Digi is the one lying? Couldn't the TC rep be lying? You're showing a bias here.

2. On the DUC -- if I remember correctly -- F. Umminger said that re-writing plug ins to work with PT|HD would take around 100 hours. does 100 hours = 6 months to TC? I think I see who's lying and I wasn't even there!

spp - if I'm showing bias..........I'm showing bias to what exactly? I'm a pro tools user, I like pro tools, but I am not a "hobby" user. I need to make sound commercial judgements when and how to invest in gear, and I cannot make such judgements when it involves a number of suppliers all providing conflicting answers (TC was not the only one).
I was prepared to make an asap switch to the new system - I found out essentialplug-inscould not as yet be used - so I have to postpone any upgrades and just HOPE they will become available prior to the "exchange pricing" end date. If they don't I will have to wait longer and invest yet another 10k plus extra. You think that shows bias? I think its just ligit concern.

All I'd like to add is the word orgasmic, and you'll get the picture. The only disadvantage is that control is PC and not Mac based, so it needs a laptop extra

sell your system and go with Nuendo, use the same converters you are using now. It'll be cheaper, sound better, be easier to upgrade, etc etc etc.

it depends on what kind of configuration you want, but a "basic" is just over 10K. Might seem a lot, but it really is worth it
