Is anyone familiar with any schools in the LA area? I'm looking to move there and go to school to learn about recording and what not. Thanks in advance.

when i was in la there were la workshop (but this is small school) and mi (music institute on hollywood bl. I think soo much better).
why are you intending to go in school?
isnt better to find a job there as a runner in some studio...that is what would I do...it is your choice...

There are two schools (real schools) that come to mind right away. First of all, the University of Southern Calif. has a really good recording department. Faculty is quite good and (most importantly) you can get great contacts in the industry and with other students there that will be hiring you for many years to come.
The second is Citrus College in Glendora. They have an absolutely beautifully facility. Consoles are Neve VR and Euphonix CS2000, Studer 2" machines with full dolby SR racks, Lots of digital gear incl. Pro Tools, DA-88s, etc... There is quite a bit of commercial stuff that comes through the doors there, too.

If you want to move further north you Could try C.D.I.S in Van. B.C. thats where I attend we have

I'm currently attending LA Recording Workshop and can reccomend it. It is, like most recording schools, rather expensive, though. One of the things that LARW does has going for it is an excellent internship portion of their program that all graduates go through. Email me if you have any questions about LA or the school. I graduated from Sound Master in '94. I entered that school knowing less than nothing and found it to be one of the best professional moves I ever made. A great deal of time is spent on all of the rudiments (electronics, acoustic theory/physics, history, etc.) so that you really understand the hows and whys of all the things you'll be doing in a pro environment. They also have in depth studies into video post if your into that. I really can't say enough good things about them. Besides, little beats getting paid to listen to music! I used to work for School of Sound Recording in NYC and there was talk of them opening a new branch in LA in the faqs on bulletin boards. Im not sure if this has happened yet but its something to look out for if anyone is looking for training. The setup was really good when I worked for them but the only issue was ever with funding. Most of it came from donations and in the end it got to a stage where we were in danger of not getting paid. I had young children to consider and got offered another gig around the same time so took that but I have really fond memories of working there!.
