Laptop audio woes.

Call me stupid, but I bought a laptop for the purpose of recording on the move. This thing's integrated audio card has recording capabilities of a drunk sheep. No matter what I do, it has a frequency response of like up to 4kHz and a constant noise floor of -30dB.

Are there any USB or Firewire solutions for this? Like Creative's USB-based Extigy, but more economic?

What about M-Audio's Quattro box?

Haven't tried it but it looks like it would do what you need.

I personally would go for an RME PCMCIA card but that probably doesn't qualify as an economical solution in your terms.

Whoops. I misused terms again =D

I meant "I don't want to pay money for bells and whistles I'll never use", namely soundfonts (realtime plugins are so much better than the clunky hardware interface), and the whole EAX crap.

I also don't like what Creative software does to my computer. ;P More bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at.

That being said, I'm willing to pay good money (within reason, of course!) for any external solutions with preferably low latency... Is there an online page I can take a look at the Quattro?

Hmm... The Quattro looks like a one-stop solution, but I'll browse around a little more. I'm not well-off, and my parents (whom I still stay with. Lazy me ) regard my music as "just a hobby". We'll see what develops.
