What's a good magazine for producers/composers/engineers?
I get "Recording" right now, but I feel like I already know everything they talk about in the articles. I make mainly electronica, pop and pop/rock, so can you recommend me a good pro magazine?

At one time there was some great mags. R.E.P, Music Player, db, Mix (while it was still free and in a newspaper format that you got from your local record or mucic store.

There really are no more pro mags left that offer a real good learning experience. Recording is pretty decent rag and it and Home Recording offer a lot of good info but pretty much stick to the basics. This is ok, since the majority of people now recording, including many, many that call themselves professional recording engineers, don't know as much about the most basic things as they need to or that you would expect them to know including how to apply many of them. Too bad those are the people that don't spend the time to read and learn from them.

You are likely to get better and more specific advice from books or by finding a web based forum targeting your music style and needs.

I too miss R.E.P. ( recording engineer producer ) and still have every issue. At times I go to throw them away, and I still get caught up reading an article, then back in the closet they go. It's kind of eerie to notice the absense of web-sites. I guess time flies when you're having fun ( or old-timers desease )
Occasionally E Q mag will have some good articals.

I've read some good articles in recording. One for example was the article to hot-rod an Octava MK-012 mic. GC had a sale 2 of them for $100.00 and I bought them as a disposeable mic. I had some time, gave the hot-rod a shot and the results were noticeably improuved. So much was the improvement, I don't consider them disposeable any more

I agree Tape Op is the best out there right now. Some great interviews, and I feel like I learn something from every issue. Or at least am entertained.

thanks, I subscribed to TapeOp for free (?!?!) I don't know how that works, but I hope the magazines will get here. Some kind of 3rd class subscription...

So I happened upon an unclaimed copy of January's installment of Electronic Musician yesterday and decided to give it a read. I had not seen a mag say so little in so many words since I read my girlfriend's copy of Cosmo (not a word, please) - nothing but a glorified catalog. This left me wondering if there is a single good magazine out there as well.

IMHO, except for the occasional article by the distinguished elder statesmen of R.A.P. (no names necessary), EQ, Recording and Home Recording are all rather lame. I spend 3 minutes paging through the new gear announcements and usually can't find anything else worth reading. A big step up from those rags are Audio Media, Pro Audio Review and Pro Sound News; and quite remarkably, all three are available for FREE!, yep, just like TapeOp. Mix is sort of a love/hate thing, only its not good or bad enough to warrant love or hate; more of a half empty or half full kind of thing. Sound on Sound and TapeOp both have notable good points and a few downers as well; and they are so different from each other that they sort of balance each other out. But the big secret comes from the UK and almost makes me forget how much I miss Studio Sound (Studio Sound was the best, hands down!!). The newcomer is called Resolution and its been out for a year or two, but its only available in the USA by an expensive overseas subscription, no newstand sales at all! You'll have to take my word for it, because they don't really have a website, just a subscription form that wasn't working when I tried to use it.

i get mix, eq and bassplayer TapeOp, you say? Maybe I might have to order... There are too many ads in all the magazines I get, if I had a nickel for each one, I could afford my own SSL 9000J! Still, clients like to read em, and there is something I think is cool every once and awhile in each mag.
