MIDI fundamentals

So I'm eyeing my 01V over in the corner knowing that I can configure its MIDI protocol so that it can function as a control surface for my digi001. Only I'm relatively inexperienced when it comes to MIDI, and such a task would be a significant undertaking for me. Both manuals provide detailed information on the protocol that each uses/requires, but I simply do not know how to interpret and implement this information. I realize that there probably isn't enough room here or anyone willing to explain all that I need to know regarding MIDI protocol, but if someone here can point me in the right direction to find this info, I'd be most appreciative.

I went over the MIDI.com (which looks surprisingly familiar) and starting a forum on this topic, but it doesn't seem to be a frequently visited site, so I thought I'd give this a shot (I haven't found any forums here devoted to MIDI).

On a separate note, I did find a forum over there (MIDI.com) begun by someone asking for software that could convert MIDI to .wav or .mp3. As I understand it, that's completely impossible, correct? MIDI ain't audio. The forum had two replies with suggestions.

Though you could get lucky here, you might have better odds finding a user with the same setup over at the Digidesign User Conference on their website. go to http://www.digidesign.com and click on support to get there.
