Need some help to find a metallica garage inc. guitar sound

I was just wondering everbodys thoughts on how metallica achieved its guitar sound on the garage inc album. On songs like astronomy, whisky in a jar, turn the page. I was wondering peoples thoughts on what amps they used, amp settings, mic technique, mic placement, tracks, tuning, plugins, eq, everything. To me that sound is one of the best, probally the best guitar sound ive heard, its just giagantic. Any kind of disscusion would help me so thanks a lot I hope you can help me out. I'm not talking about the universal metallica guitar sound either, im' talking garage inc. disc 1

They use their same stock amplifiers they used on Load and Reload and St. Anger. Some mesa's, some line 6's, etc etc, look in the booklet!

Just listen to parts where only the guitar is playing and then use some eq to try to match it

thanks for the help, but what booklet do you mean? the guitar seems just so much larger on garage inc then any other recordings. do you think theres like 4 guitar tracks on a rythm or one. Does anybody know any Bob rock tricks or secrects

the booklet of the CD case, I own that album and the more guitar tracks you add to a rhythm track the less BIG it gets.

2 guitar tracks (hard left/hard right), mic'd probably outside of the cone (the more on the cone you are the brighter the sound, this sound is very dark). They're also using tube amps so that tube distortion is most of the sound.
Then the fact they are at a world class studio (The Plant in San Fransisco, CA) has a lot to do with it also.

Checklist: New strings, tube amplifiers, off the cone mic'ing, world class studio

You might wanna let Billy Corgan know that cause siamese dream the guitars sound pretty big to me.

billy corgan layered multiple guitar lines at once, this guy was talking about layering the SAME guitar part on top of eachother (2 hard right/2 hard left)........I can actually quote Bryan Wilson from some movie documentary he made where he spoke of the phenomina of layering guitar tracks on top of eachother thinning out the sound!

I for one know that adding different guitar parts on top of eachother is awesome (when I record my brother's band he does it all the time, SIX GUITAR PARTS @ ONCE!)

Side note about that album - I remember an interview that Lars did. He said something to the effect that it took them the shortest time to record that album - If I remember correctly his words were "It took us longer to unload the equipment from our last tour than it did to record that album".

Can I get some of that talent, please? Hahaha

You might want to give Andy Sneap a call and tell him that all of his guitar recordings sound thin...especially on Killswitch Engage's records. Same goes for pretty much every metal band.
