Question to Recorder Man

Hi Chef!

I'm about to mix drums at the moment and I wanna try something different as Gating .
The snare sound is better when I DON'T gate the Toms. I mean that the snare sounds more "fat". Sure I can hear the Cymbals through the Tom mics but....who cares.
What do you think?

I agree.

I usually mic, so that when I mix all of the mics are completely part of the overall sound. Tom mics just do not only pick up toms, they pick up everything. it is just that they pick up the toms much louder in perspective relative to anything else. The same with the other mics. Since you are generally focused more on lo-mid's with toms and there's usually a few of them, they add a bottom end heavier color to anything that's peaking through them...i.e. the snare, etc. Just as the OH, add air to the other sounds.
One reason to not listyen to solo too much when tracking, the EQ and compression you apply to any mics that are part of a larger group (like drums) can and does have an impact on the others, for better or worse.

Sure!

Now abour the compression. Do you suggest a Compression for the whole thing or separate? I got the same question about Reverb, Hall etc.
