Win98SE or Windows 2000?

I've been using a DAW - p42ghz, 512mg ram, one 10gig harddrive, and another 80gig hardrive, running Cubase 3.7 with a Lexicon Core 2 interface. Well, I just bought a Delta 1010 for the added inputs and have the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 2000. I've previously experienced some problems with the system freezing up and the Lexicon has always had conflict problems with the installed soundblaster card.

Should I upgrade, or just install the new interface?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, If Win98SE works well for you, why bother?
I personally have upgraded to WinXP Home and have gained some stability but I also believe that the OS itself eats up a little bit more resources than 98SE. If you have a powerful new machine that's no real issue. If you are behind on the horsepower curve I would consider this fact.

In any case, I wouldn't bother going to Win2k any longer. Companies have their drivers more or less all ported to XP by now. Having said that, if you intend to keep using the Core2 you might be stuck with 98SE anyway :roll: . Support for that card stopped a while ago and they have neither 2K nor XP drivers.

Indeed, Win98SE is old technology and makes some of us computer geeks shudder a bit! lol

Also the mention of that Core card makes me shudder as well!!!

Win2k and XP...I've heard people say that they get better performance under Win2k than XP.

I myself didn't do much performance tests between them but if you want HT support you need XP!

Anyhue, if you tweak XP you can get it even more streamlined.

Same with Win2K but there isn't as much tweaking there as XP.

I would recommend getting a new card that has more support from a manufacturer that still recognizes their products!

Hi Opus!

If you read my original post you'll see that I already purchased a Delta 1010 and will be saying bye-bye to the Lexicon which is a little bit of a shame as it also had the MP100 daughterboard and the reverbs in it were not that bad. Still, I needed to expand from the 4 inputs that you were limited to and my DAW has more than enough horsepower to handle the TC Native Reverb as a replacement.

Sorry that I made you shudder . I'm going to go Win2K as I already have the disk from a prior install.

Apparently you're right about this. I did some digging on the net last night and came across a good primer in pdf form written by DanielKeller entitled - Optimizing Windows 2000 and Windows XP for Audio. It was on Tascam's website. You can go to http://www.tascam.com/index.html and download it if you're interested. Reading about the difference between these two systems that are based on Windows NT and the 95,98 and ME platforms that are all based on the old Windows 95 put the icing on the cake for me.
