This may be lame question but I'm learning and sorting out some questions. I need to hear why some of you choose to use a digital compressor like the Weiss DS1 over something like the STC-8? Reviews on the DS1 are all wonderful but aside from this...
If you use something like the DS1 do you more than not, add something else to help warm things up or is this pretty much all you use?
I ask this because I'm thinking more than not, the majority of music being mastered today has got to be welcoming something out side the box?
Looking at the back of the unit, it only has AES EBU, what are you using for an interface?
What do you use the MIDI for?
How often do you need more than 44.1?
Last question:
I don't imagine it would be suitable for anything other than mastering?

The way I uses the DS1 is mostly overall dynamic control (transparent), specific frequency range dynamic control and de-essing. I am not sure what you mean by interface, it is a digital unit with control/interface on the LCD panel & knobs. I uses midi to save up settings or loading previous settings, I never used it with automation.
Since I know a little bit what your needs/expectations are, I think the CS would be a better choice over the Weiss. Maybe Mike F. could jump in since I believe is a long time DS1 user ?

I know I need/want a few things for both tracking, mixing and mastering here. The DS1 definitely looks like a choice piece.
My interests, opportunities and focus is pretty wide right now. From recording Choirs, Acoustic Music, Rock Bands to Mastering and Remixes , the great white north is pretty untouched here including online opportunities. Vast opportunities for someone with ability and choice gear that actually does something special is what I'm looking for.
Question is, keep asking and reading to find out more.
I'm going to purchase some classic pieces that I feel I will use regardless of time. I'm planning to open my boutique studio located at my retirement retreat in a few years so its a lot of questions, gathering and experimenting until then.
I want something for vocals like the LA-2A or tube tech cl1b, Something middle of the road like the STC-8 and something for finishing and levelling like the Weiss DS1 or Atomic Squeeze Box Dual. There is so much available, I'm so green here.
For those of you who have never used Sequoia 11, it really covers almost everything I feel I need now. A few extra pieces like what I described seem to be all I'll really need to go with my hybrid DAW. Other than whats in Sequoia, I have almost no interest in plug-ins anymore.
So to answer what I need. Ultimately, I see myself mastering home studio music around here for some time so its why I'm asking about the DS1.
Expensive digital gear has never been a good investment so I can't help but wonder if the DS1 could be turned into a plugin quite easily? Digital gear dates faster than staple hardware. The DS1 hasn't changed in design which is interesting but worry some too. Sorry, just thinking out loud.

You can connect the unit via its AES IN via your soundcard (if it is in the begining of the chain) or from another digital unit or AD. Weiss gear always have been updated (DSP's and software) and will be (I guess). DS1 had 3 upgraded versions, EQ1 had some too with also 4 different options/configurations (LP, DYN etc.). As for plugins , I guess some might work but I can't help you much since I do not use plugs for dynamic control, maybe someone else could jump in?

The DS1 has a lot of latency so it's really unusable for tracking, mixing you have to compensate. The DS1 MK3 is the newest version and it's probably the most powerful/complex box i've run across. There are just a ton of parameters and if you kick it into M/S mode... well you get the picture, maybe. I setup presets to start from, because starting from scratch would take a long time. I wouldn't call it a colorful box, but more of a surgical tool. the midi interface is for dumping and loading stored presets. So you can save each setting for a song and then midi dump it into the session to store it. I've talked to Daniel about the possibility of him coming out with a plugin', I'm not sure if he will though. And if he does it's not going to be cheap. It may come out in another box form, but we've been waiting for that for YEARS and it's not any closer to being completed.
