scenario; recording to analog tape. 8 mic lines from the studio into 8 mic inputs in C/R. recording bands live. rhythm section, then overdubs, horns if needed, vocals last.

assume there's 5 - sm57's and 2 - 414's in the collection already. we're on a tight budget. what 8 additional mics would you choose for the mic locker?

38's won't sync chase.... Fostex machines do. you can lock midi / fsk / smpte to a 38 but you can't get a 38 to lock to anything. some of the bigger TASCAMS will chase to smpte

The 38 was always the master. We burned a track with sempte. I thought I made that clear? Whatever the deal, I have at least 500 hours of cassette copies of doing that exact thing. Three or four records of my band etc....

that was where the confusion came from.

That was my reply to Kyle and I stand by it. With analog tape, both start and continuous sync are generally handled by SMPTE timecode. For instance, to sync two analog 24-track tape machines together, you would stripe both tapes with SMPTE, and connect the two machines together using an analog tape synchronizer. If there's another way, I'm unaware of it. There may even be tape machine that were capable of generating their own sempte lock. It wouldn't shock me to learn this. But it is something I don't know.

i was confused by it. Kyle asked about syncing 2 tape machines. he never asked about syncing midi. peace bro' ....

yes that's how 2 - 24 track machines are sync'ed but in order for you to be able to do that the machines have to have serial control ports like those found on Fostex machines and the higher end TASCAM's. you cannot sync 2 - 38's but you can sync 2 Fostex A8's. that's all i'm saying and i stand by that.

Sorry. I was just relating a studio experience I had while answering his question. You COULD make a big deal out of it...but why? No one said you were wrong. At least not me. I just was being brief.

Oh well. Good day to you Kurt and good luck in your gear search. It's good to see you getting back into the game.

i'm not trying to make anything out of it Dave and i'm sorry to if it sounded that way. i just didn't want Kyle or anyone else to think that it's possible to sync up all tape machines. thanks for all the great advice.you've been a great help.

if this thread continues, i hope you will continue to contribute to it.
