Hi everyone,

I'm about to upgrade my mic from AKG Perception 120 to Neumann TLM 103 .. the thing is.. will the AKG shockmount be compatible with the TLM 103 or do i need an adapter?

Doubtful... at least not without what appears to be some substantial modification.

I mean... I guess it might work...or be made to work... but that's an expensive mic to be relying on "might".

The last thing you want to have happen, is for a shock mount failure that results in your 103 dropping to the floor (a clip or mount that isn't built to fit a mic, or one that has been modified, is nearly always the cause of in-studio mic damage). One of the most disheartening and painful sounds in the cosmos, is this sound coming out of your monitors/headphones :

"THOOMPH / CLUNK" ..... and then the worst part....Silence. LOL. ;)

The mount will also help the mic to hold its value, and be a good selling feature, should you decide to upgrade to another Neumann mic at some point in the future.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you're dropping $1100 bucks on a mic, it'd probably be a good idea to just bite the bullet and get the shock mount that is made exclusively for the model.

(The other benefit is that the mount for the 103 also fits the M-147 and TLM 193 models - so should you decide to eventually upgrade to one of these in the future, you'll already have the mount for it ).

Sometimes a cleaner mic is not the best choice for a bright preamp, it may sound harsh. Also, if you are in an untreated room, a dynamic mics may grab less room imperfections .. Just saying !

The duet is a nice bit of kit and the preamps seem to get good reviews. The breakout cable is heavier than the interface which is a pain, which is why I didn't buy it, and got a lexicon which was also cheaper. Garage band is on my mac, but compared to other recording software it's not remotely in the same league. Not quality, just facilities.

The Apogee Duet has two built-in pre-amps, so you don't need additional ones, at least for basic operation. The Duet specification says there is 75dB of gain available on the microphone inputs, which is more than enough for an SM58, so your level should not be low. You really are using an XLR-XLR lead for connecting the microphone to the Duet break-out cable, aren't you?

Maybe it was the XLR cable, gain improved a lot when connecting the sm58 directly to the breakout cable! Thanks Boswell

It might be appropriate to cut in here with a public service announcement...

Apogee is an I/O-Preamp made for Mac only. As of this writing, they do not make any models compatible with a PC.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

If this were an actual emergency you would have been instructed where to seek shelter...
(it's a U.S. thing, a relic from the Cold War days... LOL)

I've yet to receive it for testing. According to specs. It's as follows.
a solid metal housing, with stretched rubber shock-mount bands that provide optimum resistance to vibrations. The adjustment piece allows for a full 360 degree rotation.
