This one sits best in the mix: [="http://soundcloud.com/adammishan/sm7pboost-brolloff"]Sm7pboost&brolloff by Adam Mishan on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free[/]="http://soundcloud.c…"]Sm7pboost&brolloff by Adam Mishan on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free[/]

This one would sound fine if you squashed it: [[url=http://="http://soundcloud.c…"]SM7b bassrolloff by Adam Mishan on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free[/]="http://soundcloud.c…"]SM7b bassrolloff by Adam Mishan on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free[/]

The HM1 might sound ok if your crush it.

If I had to choose I would use just the bass roll off and compress the hell out of it. That being said, I think you need to concentrate on the vocal delivery first. Sing it like you mean it.

That's weird, I really thought I put emotion into it....you're not the first to have said it though...it's frustrating because I don't really know how to fix it because I don't hear it myself.

Any of those will work. The recording is clear but it really has no depth. Kind of one dimensional. I also think its your delivery more than a specific mic. I liked the Song Sparrow better than either of the others since it seemed to have a little edge to it. Compressing your voice will get you further towards the excitement....at least while you work on delivering the goods. Your pitch is really ok.

Hey guys thanks for the help, I really appreciate it, its great to know that there's people out there willing to take the time to help out.

So I tried another time with a few tweaks, what do you guys think of this one?

The second one is cleaner. First one has some distortion in the high end. It sounds like your trying to put emotion in there but I'm sorry, it just doesn't sound genuine to me.

This is where the producer comes in over the talkback or walks in the the soundbooth with you with a glass of water and proceeds to tell you a sad story about his frustration with his struggles as an artist and gets you to open up about how hard you've worked to get to where you are and the obstacles you've overcome. He gets you into that mood where you start to feel the struggle and it comes out in your singing.

I can hear you trying to put emotion in it. I don't want to hear that. I want to hear you feel the song. Stop thinking about it. Let your voice crack a bit if that's how it goes. Belt it out like you need to get this off your chest. "How long will I slide?" (how long will I let it go without doing something drastic?).

Of course, this is all just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. In the end, if you are happy with your singing, that's all that really matters.

...

Well both of those clips were from the same take just with and without music.

Yeah I hear what your saying, its hard to force something authentic though...

Weird. Firefox is bugging out on me. Both links lead me to the Acapella version. Never the less, there is distortion. It's not bad but i don't personally like it. I stand by everything else in my other post.

Hey,
So I rented the NTK for today and recorded a track.

How does it work on my voice? does it pair well?

hueseph Tue, 10/16/2012 - 16:29

It's a nice sounding mic. I still think the SM7 sounded fine. The NTK has a nice fuzz over the top. At this point it really comes down to performance. Any of the mics you chose would work. Which one do you like best? I would take the NTK on so many things but I think the SM7 sounded good. I found the Sparrow a little too brittle but I've always been a little sensitive to high frequencies. Choose one and work with it.

This is just a personal point of view. I don't like the way the preamp is clipping. I would turn down the gain. Someone else might disagree. It might also be the angle of the mic. If you are singing straight into the diaphragm the mic might be clipping. Try the mic off axis a bit and sing across the diaphragm. I could be way off here but something about the way your hitting the ceiling doesn't sound good to me. Like a car about to stall. Hard to describe.

When you say fuzz over the top, is that do you mean that as a good thing or a bad thing. I agree Sm7 sounded pretty good. But I felt that there was next to no high-frequency coming through and it made Sibilance seem unnatural because it was so subdued. There was no sheen to it.

Do you think the ntk solves that problem

hueseph Tue, 10/16/2012 - 18:39

Yes fuzz is a good thing. I didn't have any problem with the high end on the SM7. Sibilance can be a problem so consider it one less thing to fix.

Do you think that there was a problem to begin with? I don't. I thought that mic sounded just fine. It needed some tweaking but all the potential was there.

RemyRAD Thu, 10/18/2012 - 21:43

I think you're thinking about this vocal too much? What you probably need to do is to think about something entirely different? Something that has nothing to do with what you're singing. Not easy I know. You're trying to put emotion into it and it's not coming across. So you do exactly the opposite. Try to put no emotion into it at all and it will come through.

You also don't use any kind of bodily support nor do you ever take a good full breath of air. So it really depends upon what kind of delivery you're after? Are you crying on somebody's shoulder? Are you screaming your frustrations to the world? Crying in your beer at a bar and I think I'll have another? Your parents didn't have you neutered when you were a puppy did they? Because it's kind of sounding like that I'm sorry to say. Pretend you're Steven Tyler. Now try again. Do it with some angry frustration in your voice. You're never going to get her back by crying poor poor pitiful me. Linda Ronstadt sang that with more balls than you have. Sorry about that chief. But singing is really a whole body involved in the process. It's not squeaking some air past your vocal cords. You need to bombard your vocal cords with at least some energy level other than dead battery. Don't make me demonstrate. I just turned 57 and I'm done demonstrating. And all I take is my estrogen replacement therapy medication and I still sing with more balls than you have and I don't have any. So it's not the emotion but the delivery that has been misconscrewed here. Screw the emotions. Girls have emotions. Boys have rage. Let me hear some.

You need to vocally menstruate. (Blood = bad, raunch = good)
