Read a nice suggestion for recording a
guitar-combo (Twin Reverb) with an omni, determining the balance of direct & room
with the distance to the cabinet.

I guess a LD condenser in omni-mode could be suited but if we want to stick to a dynamic mic, which not too exotic types would be suited ?
I'm not familiar with omni dynamics.

i actually use my aea r84 and my schoeps SD omni on guitars. Their freq responses compliment each other nicely. Omni's are very nice--- you can record the same way you would with a 57 (maybe a little bit farther back, so you don't kill the diagphragm) but the omni gives it a little bit of air and openness that makes it seem alot more realistic. It dosen't sound as pod-like as a 57 often does

Thanks for the response. I saw the r84 is an ribbon, don't know about the SD schoeps though (I guess it's a SD condenser ? - since you mentioned complimenting freq-behav.)

Yes, what you mentioned about air and openness is what I'm looking for. The goal is the open sound and of course not the act of using a dynamic - but still, are there actually any not-too exotic omnidirectional dynamics out there ?

I have an older AKG D130 omni - it gets tons of use for guitar cabs, especially doubling, extra tracks, background noises, ambience/textures...i actually use it for pretty well anything with an amp that isn't in the forefront....the reduced proximity effect really makes these sounds 'less competitive' to the other main sounds and requires less or no eq later... I usually use it in combo with a MG U70 in omni mode somewhere in the room for more more control over spatial positioning.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I add this to
the AKG D130 suggested before I get the impression that any decent omni intended for voice could work. May be wrong here, but this will widen my chances to find something, since it's unlikely I'll find exactly those models here in the Netherlands.

BTW, I realize I had an old Akai mic, an omni dynamic as it seems - should put that to the test soon. 'ADM-5', 50 kOhm imped. - looks like an old mic for a reel to reel - removing the internal TX will make it more suited I guess.
