Hey guys, I'm not at the point where I can be picky about which mics I'm using just yet, but I'm trying to get the bases covered. I want some decent stuff. I have a d112, and a sm57, I'm looking to buy the sytek 4 channel mic preamp and two decent overhead mics. Kind of get some decent rock drum sounds going.
I see the AKG 451b mentioned here a lot, as well as the at4033. Can anyone tell me some sonic attributes to either of these and why maybe some of you prefer one to the other. I also rented some at-4051 pencils once i didnt mind those.
Any thoughts are appreciated. Also- is it worth getting those burr-brown op-amps on channel 3-4 of the sytek? i read many people dont find them very useful.

I have SM81s and the Rode NT5 pair. The Rodes are not nearly as smooth for drum OHs as the SM81s are. Don't get me wrong, I have used the NT5s for a lot of stuff, but I personally found them "harsh" on cymbals, and hi-hats. FWIW, I bought the NTs to replace a pair of "vintage" AKG C452EBs that were stolen a while back. I still miss 'em.
I have also used the Shure KSM27 as OHs (davedog shot me down for that, but, hey...). The "problem" you can run into using LDCs like KSM27s or the 4033s you mentioned, is that you'll start pulling in too much of the toms and even kick, which may not be cool with other mics on the kit(especially a rock drummer). I do big-band/Latino with those 27s, and just a kick and a snare, so that's no problemo. there are soooo many variables when it comes to micing drums. You mentioned the AT4051...I have an AT4041 that I've used with great results on hi-hat and cymbals. Smooth like the 81s.You can sometimes find either of those 2 mics on e-Bay...

Drummer's seem to like them. I certainly do.
They are a great buy for the money. And come as a matched pair.
I've also read the the KEL HM-1 is fantastic as an overhead mic. And they are an incredible deal at $99
KEL audio is still currently out of stock of the HM-1 (due to a very large demand) until late January

On the low end, the octava mc012's sound pretty good, or the AT pro37r's. Can't really go wrong with the pro37r's. In the middle price range, I like the akg c451b's and sometimes the akg414's. Groove Tubes used to make some GT44's which were a little on the expensive end but sounded amazing as overheads. If you go to gearslutz.com, they have several threads in the archives about some recording clinics they did with Michael Wagner, and everyone picked those GT44's as the top overhead mic. GT quit making them but they've told be that their new model, the GT40, will be exactly the same but $100 less per mic. Supposed to come out in Feb, so I guess we'll see. I used Schoeps CMC6/MK4's most of the time, and in my opinion they blow everything else out of the water, but it's like $2500 a pair.
