Hi,

Just finished retouching this mix, what do you think ?
Vocals were a massive pain in the butt to mix, the guy on vocals hates condensers for some reason and insisted on using an SM57 because he wanted to sound "more indie" whatever the hell that means lol.

You'd be surprised at how many records have been tracked with dynamic mics on vocals. Yes, even the SM57...
I remember the first time I heard a 57 through a really nice preamp... a Millenia, to be specific. It was jaw-dropping, and left a lasting impression on me - that I'd rather hear a 57 or 58 through a great preamp over a really nice condenser mic through a cheap pre any day. ;)

I like dynamic mics on vocals just fine but I've never been a fan of the good old 57, not saying it sucks, it's just my taste, on this particular recording the singer was too close to the mic, that caused an exaggerated proximity effect that was a bitch to get rid of, on other tracks we used a Beta 57 and it was much better for his voice, he just has a fetish for 57s so we had to use one :censored: I do like modified 57s with a Tabfunkenwerk T58 transformer, it really improves the sound, the stock transformer sounds really grainy to me.

I agree 57s can sound great with a great preamp but I've found the preamp input impedance has a lot to do with this, I'm thinking of buying a Cloudlifter Z to make my 57s and my SM7 more usable with my setup.
