Hey all,

Finally finished mixing my band's latest installment in our Animals cover - the legendary 17-minute trip that is Dogs. We aimed for something respectful of the original but with a modern sheen. What do ya'll think?

Sweet - I wish I knew this track as well as I know PIGS ---(sounds great on my system) so I'd have a more informed reference but on fresh and less familiar ears it sound really well balanced with all the dynamic fades which I can only imagine must have been a challenge to get right? How did you approach gain staging here and avoid gain creep? The performances are just fantastic as is the project itself. Very ambitious but totally pro. Particularly loved the seamless integration of the guitars (acoustic to electric).

I'd be interested now in your thoughts at this point - where does your self critical ear take you? Where would you be inclined to make changes or approach differently in the future?

Sorry for the late reply! I turned off email notifications and forgot to check the thread. Anyway, glad again to have your approval once again. I'm quite surprised how folks are LESS familiar with Dogs than Pigs (Three Different Ones), as I think Dogs is by far the better and more accessible track, but maybe that's just me? I checked all individual tracks in the mix to ensure no clipping and mastered the entire track well below 0dB to ensure no clipping harshness.

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, but sometimes I worry the vocals are too angry (but then again they SHOULD be) and some of the electrics are perhaps a bit harsh/toppy. I think the "twin" solo came out alright, but as a Gilmour die-hard I will always long for that beautiful swirling airiness of the Yamaha rotating speaker. I ran the guitar through some effects to give it the appropriate "wetness", but I'll never love it more than Gilmour's original work. But we're all biased toward the first thing we hear aren't we?
