Hello everyone, I have another problem for you! So, I am running my guitar totally clean straight into my PC through a firewire interface, and using only some VST plugins for guitar amp emulation, and an EQ and what not. The thing is, by the time I get my guitar sounding how I want it, which is quite distorted; for heavy metal and such, there is quite a bit of static in the background, I suppose just from all the gain, you know. A noise gate will do nothing in this case, since the static is constant (even while playing). Is there any way I can reduce the background static without sacrificing my badass amp sound? There must be a way!

what's your firewire interface? does it have an instrument input
what's your firewire interface? does it have an instrument input or just line inputs? how "loud" is the clean guitar signal?
maybe the signal of your guitar is too low. if you can get your guitar input signal louder without clipping it you could reduce the gain in your amp sim.

I don't know how I would get my guitar input signal louder. It's not loud, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to control it.

you should get better results with the input switched to guitar... anyway, you could try a di-box or a preamp. the studio projects vtb-1 is an affordable preamp with a really low noise level. it did improve the noise issue on my old machine.
now i have the line6 toneport gx (the new version is called pod studio gx) which is great for guitar recording. it's my main audio interface now.

have you tried the noisegate before or after the amp sim?
what kind of monitor (computer screen) do you have? old tube-style monitors will interfere with the pick ups of your guitar and cause noise.
when the noise is still audible while you play it's probably not from your guitar...
