Whatever mic I do go with, it will be going straight into a Steinberg MR816x to pt9 for awhile. (sold a Mackie onyx1220i and got this, and the mic preamp's have a noticeably better overall sound).
The only ldc I currently own is a RODE nt1a. No big surprise here, but I'm not very happy with this mic for male lead vocals. I want to keep the mic, just to have it for future applications if need be (plus it isn't worth me trying to sell it).
For the past two months I've been thinking about the Avantone CV12, I've yet to get to listen to the mic, but it has been reviewed well and recommended to me by several different folks. Since I just bought way too much stuff, my next recording gear purchase won't be for a long while, so I want to make a good decision based on that.
I'm needing to stay in the $500-$800 range on this too (I know this can limit me greatly...). I would like to have a tube mic, because I really like how tube mics sound and since I have the nt1a now I figured it would be good to go with a tube mic to increase my flexibility to get different tones. This could be very stupid reasoning though, which is why I'm here.
Avantone cv12 has been on the top of my list. I've also looked into the RODE ntk, but a little apprehensive to go with this after not being super happy with what the nt1a gives me. Sure KSM32, which isn't a tube mic, has also been suggested a lot, along with some at mics.
I have a mp of at4041's, so right now I'd like to have a ldc mainly for vocals and something that would work well with acoustic instruments or guitar cabs.
I'm a big fan of clean natural tones for both vocals and instruments. I do like the "tube sound", but not a huge fan of this odd tone that the nt1a is giving me (I've tried using it in several different rooms, with and without sound treatment).
Any suggestions for my situation?

The Rode NTK sounds nothing like an NT1A. I think it's a great mic..as is the K2. Another (non tube) LDC that many people like like is Audio Technica 4047. To my mind they are all worthy of consideration.

I use a pair of NT1-a's as drum overheads from time to time and they sound great for that application. They make drums sound HUGE.

Often a mic can be particular about a preamp. The Rode mic you have is an excellent mic in the budget category but it may not like your MR unit. I have not used it but am very familiar wih the Onyx preamps which are excellent. Sometimes it has to do with impedence mismatch.
At any rate, if you are looking for a male vocal mic then look for that. Trying to muddy things by adding utility is just going to frustrate you in this budget class. I would likely advise you to save pennies for either an AT4047 or AT4060.
