Hello everyone,

My name is Choof, I am an indie artist from Ontario, Canada. I just released a new song and am looking for feedback on the vocal mix. I work in Logic Pro, and used EQ, Compressor, De-esser, pitch correction, and a little reverb/chorus on a bus. I also layer my vocals.

I'm very new to mixing my own vocals, so any feedback would be great!

Thanks

Hi Choof Welcome to RO. Nice start! I took a quick listen on non ideal speakers. The vocal sits pretty low in the mix and could be brought further forward. The high hat is slightly fighting the vocal sibilance. Might want to consider cutting that (5k ish?) frequency on the the loop. The low mids feel a bit cloudy to me. Have you got access to the loop individual tracks?

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback!

I did notice the vocals sounding a bit muddy, but wasn't sure how to clean it up. The whole EQ thing is pretty confusing to me, I think I still need to train my ears to hear the right frequencies. I cut a little bit around 400-500hz, but maybe it's lower frequencies than that?

As far as bringing the vocals further forward, would I need to play with the compressor? Or is that related to the clashing frequencies between the beat and my vocals? Unfortunately, I do not make my own beats, someone else produced it for me.

Once again, I really appreciate the help. I definitely have trouble hearing pinpointing what needs fixing since i'm pretty new to this.

Mud to me is usually around 240Hz, however I don't think you should cut from your vocal. I would cut it from the beat. Your vocal should be in the spot light, make it full and defined, sacrifice the beat to make the vocal stand out. As for the level, before playing with the compressor, make sure the level is correct. I typically ride the faders first before I reach for the compressor. I like to think of the compressor as the fine level adjustment, and main fader as the coarse adjustment.
