I have a question:
I was approached by the band instructor at my son's middle school. At the school they have an auditorium which seats maybe 8oo total with a balcony. Plaster & wood construction. Anyway, the school wants to replace the old sound re-enforcement console with something new. He asked me to look into the particulars.
They have concerts (small & large ensambles), choir groups, school plays & assemblies. I have no expertise in choosing FOH boards & thought I could get some guidance from our group.
Are there virtual units available that could be operated from a laptop? Do I need to look at regular boards? Is 16 channels appropriate? I'm starting from scratch & probably they are working on a limited budget. They will keep the current power amps & speakers.

You're not gonna want to mix on a laptop. In any case there is the real necesssity for mic preamps and analog output to the power amps. Mackie SR series are pretty good. There is also the digital route. Yamaha O2R and the like will include FX and compression but are more difficult to operate. An analog setup should include some compressors and an FX unit.

I don't prefer small (dense) boards like the Mackies because it is too easy to reach for a knob on the wrong channel. That being said, budget usually rules.
One thing to consider is to check with the big time sound production company in your area. They have to cycle mixers out just to keep up with the latest and greatest rental demands. Many of these organizations will donate or provide a long term loaner of a larger commercial board.
